Subject: [Agvisors] Fwd: encouraging students to take the PPL test
Greetings Agvisors,
See message below regarding math placement. Moving forward we will include the message during the college meeting. In summary, based on the suggestions below, students will be encouraged to take the placement test.
You may do the same if it isn’t already taking place during the schedule review. Thank you!
Best,
Nancy

Subject: encouraging students to take the PPL test
HI,
I need some help! Please forward to your advisors as you see fit.
What is happening
We have noticed that students have been accepting their initial math placement
(based on SAT/ACT or the lack of such a score) and that few have been taking the
ALEKS PPL test, even when the Next Steps Center messaging encourages them to do so.
Many of these students are using SAT/ACT scores that are old,
but they have taken more math in the mean time. Indeed we have seen some students
who anticipate strong AP scores for calculus but who have accepted placement in math 100.
What are we doing?
The Math Department is contacting students who already participated in orientation to encourage
students to take the PPL test if their SAT/ACT placement is "low". We are also messaging students
about 5 days prior to their orientation date to recommend the test if their SAT/ACT placement is
below their foundation math course.
What you can do?
You can help your majors by encouraging them to take the placement test in the
Next Steps Center if they have not already done so. This is especially important
for students whose placement without the test seems low for their major or background.
There is no additional cost for the first test-- the only cost to the student is the
time spent on the test.
At orientation
If a student has completed a high school precalculus or calculus course, a placement into
Math 100, Math 112, or even Math 120R might be too low. If you can fit it into your
presentation, please encourage any student who places into Math 100, 112 or 120R (for
the calculus majors) via SAT/ACT to take the PPL test . Who knows, maybe some can skip a
math class. :-)
Thank you!
