Good afternoon,
The eSMS academic advising application developed by Eller College of Management will be going campus-wide for the 2019-20 academic year.
The ability to expand eSMS as an enterprise advising technology solution for UA academic advisors and students is being made possible through a funding commitment from Provost Jeff Goldberg and Chief Financial Officer Gregg Goldman. Each year for three years, $450,000 will be allocated from central funding to support the campus-wide expansion. During the third year, this commitment will be re-assessed based on the needs of academic advising and potential alternative solutions at that time.
Having a campus-wide advising system will provide a more effective tool for advisors, increase advisors’ productivity, create a more consistent experience for student and advisor interactions, and provide greater institutional visibility into university advising practices.
In response to interest among colleges in eSMS, Provost Goldberg charged a workgroup in February 2018 to evaluate advising technology solutions. The workgroup, which consisted of representatives from UITS, College of Engineering, Academic Affairs, CALS, Eller, and Student Affairs, interviewed academic advisors from 14 colleges. Four advising solutions were evaluated, including eSMS.
The workgroup found eSMS to be a strong match for academic advising needs at UA, and suitable for campus-wide deployment once re-factored for enterprise implementation.
The Eller College Undergraduate Program developed eSMS to bring efficiency to its academic advising process. The system has allowed the advisors to spend more quality time with students and build effective service relationships. Technology is constantly changing and eSMS is continually enhanced based on student and advisor feedback. Last year, eSMS was piloted with advisors in the College of Letters Arts & Science to test the expansion of the system.
Eller and UITS will work as a team to modify eSMS for implementation to the rest of campus, and continue to develop eSMS to meet UA’s academic advising needs. The enterprise eSMS will be co-managed by Eller and UITS, and when appropriate integrated into a broader enterprise Customer Relationship Management strategy.
Technology is a key driver for student and academic success, and we are grateful to the Provost and Chief Financial Officer for funding this important initiative. If you have any questions about the eSMS project, please contact Pam Perry or Darcy Van Patten.
