Subject: [UPAC] LASC 493-Spring Med Mentor Internship!
Dear Colleagues:
The Pre-Health Professions Advising Center's annual pre-med internship has been infused by some of our new medical partners and we are happy to announce that the primary application is NOW AVAILABLE! Here is a description with link to our website (online application); we would greatly appreciate your helping us get the word out about the internship. APPLICATION IS DUE OCT. 5.
The Pre-Health Professions Advising Center Staff is pleased to announce the opening of applications for our Med Mentor Internship for spring semester, 2016!
For the past 8 years, we have offered the "Philip Carter, MD Memorial Clinical Rotation Internship." Because of some changes with our clinical partners, we have developed new partnerships within the Tucson medical community and after a bit of a delay, we are able to offer a newly restructured opportunity for our pre-med students. This updated version of our internship is still the LASC 493 (3 units) course designed for students intending to apply to medical school during the current application cycle, meaning those planning to start their program in 2017. If you are not in your third year at The University of Arizona or beyond, then you would not be in the 2017 application cycle. Through this internship, students have the opportunity to observe practicing physicians in their practices, develop mentoring relationships with health care professionals, explore career options, attend lectures to learn about important health care issues and prepare for the application to medical programs.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To further explore your career goals by talking with doctors and other health care professionals whose own career paths are congruent with your interests.
To learn how major health care issues are manifested within the health care setting, i.e. professionalism, ethics, health care disparities and special populations, through weekly lectures on Thursdays 5-5:50 PM.
To observe physicians in their workplaces and begin to develop communication and empathy skills fundamental to effective patient care.
To prepare for writing the personal statement required in the medical school application.
To develop interview skills.
To Apply:
1. The PRIMARY APPLICATION FOR SPRING 2016 MED MENTOR INTERNSHIP is available on our website at http://prehealth.arizona.edu.
2. Complete the application, following directions carefully.
3. Applications are due by NO LATER THAN 11:59 PM on October 5, 2015. LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. The computer generated date/time will be the final determination of lateness. Don't let this be an issue, please.
4. Application essays will be evaluated and a secondary application sent to those who submitted the most competitive primary applications. Please note that GPA will not be factored into the primary evaluation. Secondary Applications will be due NO LATER THAN 11:59 PM on Oct. 15.
5. Be available during non-class times week days between October 19th and October 30th for follow-up interview.
6. Applicants should reserve Thursdays, 4-5 PM for class times for their spring, 2016 schedule. Classes for this internship will be held at the College of Medicine building in the Arizona Health Sciences area north of Speedway.
Best,
Stephanie Watson
