Greetings STEM Wildcats!
Want to make a difference in the lives of STEM-interested middle school youth? Enroll in HED 350 today!
Higher Education 350: Service-learning for Student Outreach for Access & Resiliency: Mondays & Wednesday 3-4:15pm
This course will introduce STEM undergraduates to the role of individual, cultural, social, and environmental factors that affect student academic achievement and the path to higher education. Undergraduates will be exposed to literature and meaningful discussions that allow them to analyze the major theories and research conducted in the areas of college access, outreach, academic achievement, and resiliency. This is your chance to become the mentor who helped you select your STEM major and career for a middle school scholar!
Project SOAR, the service-learning component of this course, allows STEM undergraduates to share their STEM expert knowledge and college experience with STEM-interested middle school youth. Mentors meet with their middle school mentees weekly on exciting and interactive STEM activities such as the
4-wheel balloon car (http://pbskids.org/designsquad/build/4-wheel-balloon-car/) and the hovercraft (http://pbskids.org/designsquad/build/hovercraft/) ! Undergraduates will bring their mentoring experiences back to the classroom to enhance and refine their understanding of course topics.
STEM Mentors have said the best part about STEM mentoring is:
“…watching our middle school mentees get as excited about the sciences as we are!”
“…being able to make a positive difference in the kids lives and helping them realize their full potential to select a STEM major in college!”
