Greetings Agvisors:
Below are two updates/announcements.
Orientation
Thank you all for the assistance you have provided in welcoming our new incoming class of freshman and transfer students. CALS has welcomed (via orientations) approximately 260 freshman and 110 transfer students.
After today we have 9 freshmen, 9 transfer, and 1 international student orientations pending. :)
Speaking of orientation, on the pre-schedules that we email you for the new FR, if you have different preferences from what students end up with please follow up with me. I mention this in particular for the majors that require MCB181R/L. Many new students end up with placement in MCB181R/L and not CHEM 151; even though completion of CHEM 151 is strongly recommended prior to MCB181R/L enrollment. We have been leaving MCB181R/L with MATH 112 or 109C on students schedules. If you have an alternative course you prefer students have instead of MCB181R/L for their first term we would like to know. Elaine Marchello modifies the pre-schedules the morning of each session and I modify them as need be right after the college meeting (considering transfer credits in the system or new students that change their major at the college meeting).
Thanks in advance.
Probation Students
The second item is in regards to students on academic probation. A service indicator (advising hold) was placed on students UAccess Student Center account yesterday 6/11/15. This is for all students with a GPA below a 2.0 in CALS. There are 241 students in this status. This hold allows students to drop courses, but prevents them from adding to their schedules.
To remove the hold students will need to complete the following:
* First time students on probation (probation letters 2 and 7 [first time students only]) will be required to fill out an academic plan (attached for your reference), schedule an appointment with the major advisor, and an appointment with a CAS advisor (Kristen or I). Kristen or I will remove the hold once they meet with us.
* Continuing students on probation (probation letters 3, 4, 6) will need to schedule an appointment with a CAS advisor. They will be encouraged to meet with their major advisor but won't make it mandatory to remove the hold, since they are continuing on probation and should have met with you when they first ended up on probation (last term or previously). We will provide them with their options on how to they can attain good standing (i.e. GRO, retroactive withdrawal if they qualify, etc.)
* Continuing students on probation with letters 7 have been changed to 'no major selected' in CALS. They will be required to schedule an appointment with a CAS advisor.
* Disqualified students (letter 1) were also placed with a hold. Their enrollment has been cancelled from summer session I and subsequent terms, but in case they want to speak with someone and they missed reading their email the service indicator hold will refer them to CAS.
Below is a key to the probation letters for your reference, as they were noted on the memo sent to all CALS units in early June with your probation student lists.
1 = University Disqualification (DQ) - (55 students; Spring 2014 - 33 students)
2 = 1st time Probation - (108 students; Spring 2014 - 134 students)
3 = Continuing Probation - (31 students; Spring 2014 - 75 students)
4 = Congratulations for fulfilling academic contract, but continue on probation - (12 students; Spring 2014 - 14 students)
6 = Courtesy semester (will be disqualified after Fall 2015 unless significant progress is made; students can appeal) - (14 students; Spring 2014- 28 students)
7 = Will be changed to no major selected (NMS) within CALS to work on major exploration (21 students; Spring 2014 - 7 students)
Thanks again for your assistance and please keep us posted if you have any questions or concerns.
Happy Friday and Bear Down!
Nancy
