Subject: General Petitions, retroactive and medical withdrawals

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all having a good start to the semester! I'm writing just to clarify the General Petition Committee's stance on retroactive withdrawals, in particular, requests past the one-year retroactive withdrawal deadline and partial medical withdrawals. If you could please spread the word to anyone who might need to know this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Over the past year the General Petitions Committee was willing to 'grandfather' in some petitions requesting retroactive withdrawals that were more than one year old (see the retroactive withdrawal policy here: http://catalog.arizona.edu/2014-15/policies/leavingu.htm#Retroactive). However, going forward, the Committee will no longer be allowing those exceptions, even with college support. The policy does state, "If a student demonstrates good cause for being unable to file a petition within this one year period, then the time period may be extended." However, the Committee does not feel that, for example, being unaware of the one year deadline, being unable to get in touch with a course instructor, living out of state, or not being enrolled at the University, constitutes 'good cause.'

Also, partial medical withdrawals will not be considered by the Committee unless the student can explain and medically document why only certain courses were affected by the medical condition and not others. Last semester some partial retroactive withdrawals were filed as non-medical petitions but with only medical documentation to support the student's request. However, these types of requests will have to be filed as and considered medical withdrawals (so please don't submit them as non-medical petitions unless there are other extenuating circumstances besides just medical).

If you have any questions about General Petitions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,
Mary Ellen Clark
