Looking for ways to get involved in the Tucson community? Be a role model and mentor middle school students through Project SOAR!
Check us out on Facebook at http://arizona.us7.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=d02ce653ff78467d92a1ca720&id=1273dd6b34&e=af2923c469
Project SOAR is a 2-unit service-learning course (HED 397B) designed for those committed to providing mentoring for students at under-resourced middle schools in the Tucson community, in an effort to increase the academic achievement for these students. This course provides an introduction to research around learning and developmental factors as well as cultural, social and environmental factors that affect student academic achievement and the path to higher education.
Although there is an academic component to this upper-division course, a majority of the time (2 hrs/wk) is spent mentoring at a local middle school (we serve 13 middle schools in the Tucson area, most of which are about a 20 min drive from campus) for a total of 25 hours per semester (this includes travel time & prep time). Carpooling is available, students DO NOT have to have a car.
You can enroll in HED 397B directly on UAccess Student link.

GER 422: “When African Americans Came to Berlin/Paris” will be taught in English and will look at transnational relations/encounters between African Americans and Germany. This course will be team-taught with Dr. Barbara Kosta from the Department of German Studies and Dr. Bryan Carter from the Department of Africana Studies.
A study abroad component for 1 unit to visit Berlin and Paris during spring break of 2015 is also available!
A brief description of the course is below:
German 422: When African Americans Came to Berlin/Paris
Tuesday/Thursday 2:00pm – 3:15pm
Course Description and Objectives
The course explores the presence of African-Americans in Berlin and the social, historical contexts in which these transcultural exchanges took place. It looks at the fascinating history of African Americans in Berlin from artists and musicians to writers, scientists and political activists; when African Americans came to Berlin, life for them at home andabroad changed forever.
Questions of race, gender and cultural interactions throughout the twentieth century are investigated. Germany will be looked at through the encounter with African-Americans and the discourses of celebration and/or fear that emerged.
Learning outcomes
Over the course of the semester, you will:
* Examine and understand primary texts through close textual reading.
* Gain knowledge of the cultural context and history of German-speaking countries
* Probe more critical and discerning views of the representations of African American people, historical and contemporary, in the media, popular and digital culture.
* Collaborate with classmates to consider how race is read within the context of twentieth century Germany.
* “Create” digital projects demonstrating an understanding of course themes.
* Familiarize yourself with the significant roles African Americans have played the world.
Please note that you can enroll in this course directly in UAccess. For more information about the course and/or study abroad component, please email Dr. Kosta at bkosta at email.arizona.edu (mailto:bkosta at email.arizona.edu) !

Looking for an opportunity to conduct research and learn more about environmental health science?
Announcing EHS-TRUE: Environmental Health Sciences Transformative Research Undergraduate Experience
Summer 2015
(A decision on the funding of this program by NIH will be made in late January 2015; students are encouraged to apply for opportunities in addition to EHS-TRUE.)
Arsenic in drinking water: it’s colorless, odorless, tasteless, and responsible for one in five deaths in Bangladesh today. Chemicals in plastics can mimic sex hormones. Early-life exposure to farm animals prevents childhood asthma.
Environmental health scientists at the University of Arizona (UA) work at the cutting edge of understanding the relationships between environmental exposures, altered biological processes, and human disease. Now you have the opportunity to work with them in researching environmental health problems, through the EHS-TRUE program.
The UA EHS-TRUE program is a prestigious, National Institutes of Health-funded undergraduate research training program, targeting students from backgrounds under-represented in the sciences, that will pay you to conduct environmental health science research with some of the leading experts in environmental health science. The program offers each participant two years of paid year-round training and research experience (35 hours/week for 12 weeks in both summer 2015 and summer 2016, and 15 hours/week during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 academic years) in EHS-TRUE faculty mentors’ research groups to help students develop an understanding of environmental health sciences, to apply classroom learning to research in environmental health, and to aid in deciding on a career path. Students take an introduction to environmental health sciences course and an introduction to biomedical research careers course during their two years in the program and participate in activities
(workshops, retreats, scientific conferences) to expand their research experience. The goal of EHS-TRUE is to prepare undergraduates from under-represented backgrounds to enter graduate programs in the environmental health sciences.
Eligibility:
* Interest in environmental health science research (students of any major are eligible)
* Current sophomore or junior attending the University of Arizona, with an anticipated graduation date of May 2017 or later
* Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
* US Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States

The Student Health Advocacy Committee (SHAC) is currently accepting new member applications for Spring 2015. We are a Program and Service of ASUA and serve as the liaison between the student body and Campus Health Services. Last year, we trained students in continuous chest compression CPR, hosted healthy cooking classes at the Rec, helped vaccinate the homeless at Tucson Hopefest, implemented first aid kits in the residence halls, hosted our 9th annual 5K Run for Your Life event, increased student access to sexual health resources, and helped advocate and pass the tobacco-free UA campus policy. This year we hope to continue advancing our initiatives and reach out to even more students.
As such, we find ourselves growing fast, and therefore we are looking for highly motivated individuals to join our team to bring health and wellness to our community. We are looking for different types of people, with a range of skills, including marketing, fundraising, advertising, leadership, or any health-related knowledge. Applicants are required to have a strong work ethic, an intense passion for health, a desire to help others, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 (no exceptions). Acceptance into SHAC is highly competitive, but we encourage all who are interested to apply.
The application can be found online at: http://arizona.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d02ce653ff78467d92a1ca720&id=6c7e33772a&e=af2923c469
Application materials are due by January 16, 2015 to asuashac at gmail.com (mailto:asuashac at gmail.com) .
