Dear CALS Faculty members and advisors,

This fall, the UA School of Journalism will be offering a science journalism course that might interest your students. The course will be taught by a former bench scientist who studied genetics in the Animal Science Department at UC Davis and is now a science journalist.

There are no prerequisites, and we encourage graduate and undergraduate
students of all majors to consider taking the course.

Science journalism students will:

•Learn how to communicate with the public about science, technology, nature, the environment, medicine and health.
•Observe scientists in their habitat, interview researchers in action and interact with prominent science journalists and scientists.
•Gain career skills, write stories for newspapers and magazines.
•Explore the world of online science journalism and learn how to start a science blog.
•Learn how to mine science websites for story ideas. Learn how to design and produce a simple infographic.
•Give themselves a competitive edge, and learn about science journalism opportunities, including internships!

The instructor will teach transferable critical thinking skills and hands-on writing skills.

I've attached a flyer describing the course, which you may distribute as you see fit.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Cheers!

Susan E. Swanberg, J.D., Ph.D.
