Subject: [UPAC] Chemistry and Biochemistry Minors and Additional Information

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to remind you that the Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry implemented a six unique unit policy for the CHEM minor
starting in Fall 2010. Since there has been some confusion about the policy
for the CHEM minor, beginning in Fall 2104, all students with a CHEM or BIOC
minor must have a CBC advisor signature on the degree check form.

Please note that any UA advisor can add either a CHEM or BIOC minor to a
student's plan. However, in order to ensure conformance to the policies set
by the CBC faculty, substitutions/waivers/exceptions/equivalencies can only
be made by CBC advisors. Please inform students that CBC advisors are
available through email or walk-in to provide information about
courses/requirements or to discuss requests for alterations.

Additional information:

It has come to our attention that students who have attempted but not passed
lower level CHEM courses are allowed by UAccess to enroll in the next course
in either the general or organic chemistry sequence. Please note the
following pre-requisites:

Passing CHEM 151 R 152

Passing CHEM 152 R first semester organic chemistry

Passing first semester organic chemistry R second semester organic chemistry

For organic chemistry labs, the corresponding lecture is a co-requisite.

If you notice that a student is moving on to the next course in the sequence
but has not passed the pre-requisite, please have them revise their
schedules as early as possible. CBC will begin to administratively withdraw
such students beginning in Fall 2014, and as you are aware, lower division
CHEM courses tend to fill to capacity.

Reminder:

CBC advisors and the CBC Teaching Support Office cannot over enroll lower
division CHEM courses. Please remind students that they must regularly check
UAccess for an open section and then enroll themselves as spots become
available.

If we can provide any assistance or further clarification, please let us
know!

Sincerely,

CBC Advising
