Subject: [UPAC] FW: [N-RESEARCH-L] new research brief on student knowledge
of and preparation for math placement tests - from the community college
research center
Hello UPAC,
Since math placement is an issue near and dear to most of our hearts, and
research related to how we can help students may be useful.
The findings (the link below is to the full article) from community college
research are summarized below (not earth-shattering, but useful):
Results from our analysis suggest that many students who go on to enroll in
developmental
math are unlikely to prepare for the math placement exam, although most
students know
ahead of time that they are required to take the exam and many colleges make
test prepara
tion materials available. Lack of preparation may undermine students' exam
performance
and negatively affect the accuracy of their placement. We identify four
interconnected
reasons why students tend to not prepare for the exam: (1) misperceptions
about the stakes
of the assessment and placement process, (2) lack of knowledge about
preparation materials,
(3) misunderstandings about why and how to prepare for a college placement
exam, and
(4) a deep lack of math confidence.

Dear community college advisors:
I want to let you know about a new research brief from the Community College
Research Center (at Teachers College, Columbia University) from a study we
are doing of statewide developmental education reform in Virginia and North
Carolina. The brief looks at student attitudes towards their math placement
tests, and whether or not they prepared for these tests. As I'm sure you all
know, few students do prepare for these tests, and the brief includes some
recommendations for how students might be encouraged to prepare. The brief
can be found here:

.pdf
The authors of the brief are very much interested in getting this research
into the hands of student affairs administrators and staff. I hope you find
it useful, and we would love to hear any feedback or thoughts you might
have.
Warm Regards,
Georgia
