The Graduate College encourages students to prepare for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) through formal or informal instruction and study, as appropriate to the individual. For those students seeking professional assistance, one option to consider is a workshop led by Michael Flynn, Executive Director of Grad Pros Educational Consulting. Mr. Flynn has facilitated GRE workshops on the UA campus since 2000 and has received consistently positive feedback.
There are three components to this workshop.
1. practice tests -- The course begins with a GRE practice test administered under simulated test conditions. Scores will be analyzed to determine areas of strength and weakness for each participant. One additional practice test will be taken in class, and another will be taken at home to familiarize students with the GRE's computer format.
2. group instruction -- Test-taking strategies for the quantitative, verbal and writing sections of the GRE will be covered along with time management, stress/anxiety and other topics relating to test performance. Timed sections will be administered to assess individual strengths/weaknesses and to improve pacing.
3. extra help from the instructor -- The instructor, Michael Flynn, is Executive Director of Grad Pros Educational Consulting and former admissions committee member at Harvard University and the UCSD School of Medicine. Extra help will be available during and after the workshop.
Additional Information:
Dates: The Fall 2014 workshop is designed to be completed over 4 days, as noted below. As new material is presented in each class, students need to commit to attending all four days of the workshop. The workshop is held on the UA campus.
· Saturday, September 20 (9 AM to 5 PM)
· Sunday, September 21 (9 AM to 1 PM)
· Saturday, October 18 (9 AM to 5 PM)
· Sunday, October 19 (9 AM to 1 PM)
Cost: $250
To request a seat in the workshop, please contact Michael Flynn by email: gradpros at gmail.com <mailto:gradpros at gmail.com?subject=UA%20Fall%20GRE%20Workshop> . In addition to your full name and phone number, please include the following information about your affiliation with UA and your plans to take the GRE:
A) Current UA students: indicate your year in school (junior, senior, graduate student, etc.) and expected GRE test date. Note: you may be asked to show your UA Cat Card at the first workshop.
B) UA alumni: indicate your graduation date and expected GRE test date.
C) UA staff: indicate your title, department, and expected GRE test date.
D) Community members: indicate your expected GRE test date.
Class size is limited and registration is prioritized in the order indicated above. Please consider the interests of others and only request a seat in the workshop if you can fully commit to attending all four scheduled class meetings and plan to take the GRE soon after completing the workshop (within a month or so).
Additional questions may be directed to Stephanie Adamson <mailto:adamsons at email.arizona.edu?subject=GRE%20Workshop%20Inquiry> in the UA Graduate College.

SCRiM Summer Scholars 2014
a 9-week summer research opportunity at Penn State University
for undergraduates and early-career graduate students

The Network for Sustainable Climate Risk Management (SCRiM <http://scrimhub.org/> ) links a transdisciplinary team of climate scientists, economists, philosophers, statisticians, engineers, and policy analysts to answer the question, “What are sustainable, scientifically sound, technologically feasible, economically efficient, and ethically defensible strategies for managing the risks associated with climate change?”

SCRiM invites undergraduates and beginning (first-and second-year) graduate students interested in climate change, sustainability, risk management, and/or decisionmaking under uncertainty to propose summer research projects centered on SCRiM themes. Appropriate projects might include modeling experiments using simple Earth system and/or economic models, analyses of geophysical datasets (observed or modeled), or meta-analyses based on synthesis of existing literature. Although projects will be largely self-directed, participants will be mentored and supported by SCRiM researchers as they develop and execute their research agenda.

The program runs for 9 weeks, starting 2 June 2014. Housing, travel support, and a stipend of $4500 is provided for all participants.

Students studying in the following disciplines would be well-positioned for the program:
· Applied Mathematics
· Civil & Environmental Engineering
· Computer Science
· Economics
· Environmental Science
· Geography
· Geosciences / Geology
· Meteorology / Atmospheric Science
· Oceanography
· Operations Research
· Philosophy
· Physics
· Statistics
This is a competitive opportunity with a limited number of openings. To apply, please send a single PDF file to scholars at scrim.psu.edu <http://mailto:scholars@scrim.psu.edu/> containing a cover letter (briefly explaining your interest in the program and what you hope to gain from the experience), a one-page research proposal, a current CV, transcripts (unofficial acceptable), and contact information for two references. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and should be submitted no later than Monday 28 April 2014 to receive full consideration. Women, members of underrepresented groups, and students from small colleges are especially encouraged to apply.

To learn more about SCRiM, please visit http://scrimhub.org <http://scrimhub.org/> . or contact Dr. Robert Nicholas at rob.nicholas at psu.edu
