We are looking for qualified undergraduate students to study at Kansas State University in sustainable bioenergy for summer 2014.

If you would like a challenging and fun summer research experience in Sustainable Bioenergy please see the message below and the attached file. We have openings in Agriculture Economics, Agronomy, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Grain Science and Industry, and Sociology.

Kansas State University is now accepting applications for the summer 2014 Research Experience for Undergraduates program May 27, 2014 – August 1, 2014. The application deadline is February 15, 2014.

The Kansas State University Center for Sustainable Energy seeks applications for its summer 2014 REU program in sustainable bioenergy funded by the National Science Foundation. Total value of this program is $7,600.00 per student.

Eligibility: We accept students from all science, agricultural, and engineering majors and class years. Applicants must be American citizens or permanent residents. First-generation college students, members of ethnic minority groups, females in STEM disciplines, and other under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply. No previous laboratory or research experience is required.

Program Overview: The research you will receive in this program under the guidance of faculty mentors will advance your state of knowledge in sustainable energy. You will participate in “hands-on” experiences with processing agricultural biomass, experiencing the physical environment of industrial-scale biomass processing with all its limitations and opportunities. Students will also meet people that actually perform the work to produce renewable energy in the communities where they live.

Please note: We have applied to NSF for a program renewal – we should be notified by NSF in the Jan/Feb 2014 timeframe on the status of our program renewal.

Looking for ways to get involved in the Tucson community? Be a role model and mentor middle school students through Project SOAR!

Project SOAR is a 2-unit service-learning course (HED 397B) designed for those committed to providing mentoring for students at under-resourced middle schools in the Tucson community, in an effort to increase the academic achievement for these students. This course provides an introduction to research around learning and developmental factors as well as cultural, social and environmental factors that affect student academic achievement and the path to higher education.

Although there is an academic component to this upper-division course, a majority of the time (2 hrs/wk) is spent mentoring at a local middle school (we serve 8 middle schools in the Tucson area, most of which are about a 20 min drive from campus) for a total of 25 hours per semester (this includes travel time & prep time). Carpooling is available, students DO NOT have to have a car.
You can enroll in HED 397B directly on UAccess Student link.

Quotes from SOAR mentors:
“Project SOAR is more than a class; it is definitely a life experience. I am extremely grateful and proud that I was part of it.”

“Each of my mentees now has college aspirations and a brighter view of what college has to offer them.”

“I can’t even put into words how much of an effect this course has had on me, but it certainly shows through my actions. I now work with students every chance I get, and also plan to get involved with the “Big Brother, Big Sister” program next semester. I truly believe that this program has helped me just as much—if not more—than it is helping the students I work with.”

Lectures on Mondays 5:00-6:30
and additional small-group discussions

This course is an introduction to selected substantive, procedural, historical, and institutional aspects of the law. Ultimately, it is about critical thinking and clear communication. Students will be provided with a rigorous understanding of the ways that rhetoric, argument, fallacies, values, and evidence are deployed in deciding fundamental social questions, using 13 cases from the United States Supreme Court as specimen. After hearing argument and analysis from leading legal scholars in their fields, students will engage in facilitated small-group discussions and complete intensive writing assignments. Students will develop reasoning skills, becoming more critical thinkers and writers.
