Subject: [UPAC] Honors thesis - Your feedback needed!
Hello advisors:
In the few months I've been working at the Honors College, I've learned that
departments have widely varying processes for managing the Honors thesis.
In order to better serve students and make sure they're complying with both
major and Honors requirements, I'm sending out this survey (below) in order
to inquire about your thesis processes. I'd like to know whether you have a
capstone/thesis requirement other than the standard 498H, whether you
require department-level thesis approval, how students register for thesis
credit, etc. If you could respond to me at rmitch at email.arizona.edu with
your answers to the following questions, I'd be very appreciative. I'll be
compiling this info for my use in Honors, but am also happy to share it with
any of you who are interested in knowing how other departments manage the
Honors thesis. Thanks in advance for your feedback! J

1. Major(s):
2. Does this major already require a capstone/thesis for all students? If
so, what are the course numbers for the capstone?
3. When students are narrowing down their thesis topics, do you prefer
that they start the conversations with you (academic advisor) or work
directly with faculty?
4. Do students need to obtain approval from the department in order to
complete a thesis, other than the support of the faculty advisor who has
agreed to work with them?
5. What is the process for thesis registration in your department? What
paperwork do you require?
6. Can students start a thesis in any semester (fall/spring/summer)?
7. Please share any other details about your department's thesis processes
that would be helpful for students to know as they are planning their
projects.
Rebecca Mitchell, M.Ed.
