Subj: Update on Educational Sanctions for Academic Integrity
Violations
The Dean of Students Office is pleased to announce its new educational
sanction plan available for faculty working with the UA Code of Academic
Integrity. Faculty and instructors have expressed a need for educational
sanctions from which students can learn if they should violate the UA Code
of Academic Integrity. To address this need, our office has created a new
Academic Integrity Workshop (which will be required of all students who
violate the Code) and revised the Plagiarism Education Workshop.
Both workshops are available beginning Fall 2012 and is reflected on the
forms faculty and instructors complete to record academic integrity
violations. Faculty and instructors may still assign traditional sanctions
(e.g., loss of credit for work involved or failing grade on the assignment)
in addition to the workshops. Details about the workshops are below.
Academic Integrity Workshop
Participation in the new Academic Integrity Workshop is required of all
students who violate the UA's Code of Academic Integrity. This two hour
workshop will address topics such as integrity and ethical behavior,
including its short and long term consequences. Students will be assessed a
$30 fee to participate in this workshop.
If a faculty member or instructor deems the Academic Integrity Workshop
unnecessary, they have authority to waive this sanction and assign
traditional sanctions as listed on the Record of Faculty/Student Conference
Form.
Plagiarism Education Workshop
The Plagiarism Education Workshop is still available for faculty and
instructors to use as an additional sanction. The curriculum for the
Plagiarism Education Workshop has been revised and the session is now three
hours in length. Students will be assessed a $30 fee to participate in this
workshop.
Additionally, the Dean of Students Office has partnered with the Writing
Center in the THINK TANK, and the Plagiarism Education Workshop will be
taught by this unit. This is an important change as the THINK TANK has the
technical writing expertise to teach this workshop. Also, this unit is the
direct link to academic support services from which students participating
in the workshop can benefit.
The UA Code of Academic Integrity, information about processes, and forms
can be found on our website at
<http://www.deanofstudents.arizona.edu/academicintegrity>
www.deanofstudents.arizona.edu/academicintegrity. Please also note that the
Dean of Students Office moved and our new location is in the Robert L.
Nugent Building.
We are excited about these educational sanctions and hope the workshops will
mitigate the number of academic integrity violations occurring on our
campus. If you have questions about UA's Code of Academic Integrity, please
contact me via email at <mailto:lorit at email.arizona.edu>
