Evening English Program at CESL
The University of Arizona's Center for English as a Second Language (CESL)
is an established leader in English language teaching with decades of
experience in the US and abroad. All programs at the CESL meet high
standards of excellence. In the coming month, CESL is offering a variety of
exciting courses that may be of interest to your students to improve their
English skills.

Students must be a high school graduate or at least 18 years of age and
literate in their first language.
Classes offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm
Conversation: This intermediate-to-advanced level course is for students who
want to further develop their knowledge and use of spoken English through
intensive practice. The course focuses on all the factors that play a role
in casual conversation. This will include pronunciation accuracy and
fluency, slang, idioms, and colloquial language. This course will also
provide extensive focus on phrasal verbs. In addition, it will focus on
popular conversation topics that reflect Americans' cultural interests.
Finally, we will be performing practiced and spontaneous monologues and
dialogues to help build fluency and accuracy. Prerequisite(s): Completion
of Level 50 or Intermediate General English, placement test, or program
coordinator consent
PRON - Pronunciation: This course is designed for high-intermediate ESL
students who want to focus on American English pronunciation through
intensive practice. Rhythm, stress, intonation, and accuracy at the word
level are emphasized. Coursework involves increasing language fluency,
analyzing the sounds of American English, and developing monitoring skills.
Prerequisite(s): Intermediate General English, placement test or program
coordinator consent. An Advanced Pronunciation class may be available in
August, depending on demand. For more information, email

TOEFL/IELTS Test Techniques: This course will focus on further development
of students' writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills, especially
those that should ensure the students' success in taking the TOEFL/IELTS
tests. Students will reinforce and expand their existing language skills,
knowledge of TOEFL/IELTS-related vocabulary, grammar structures, written
rhetorical formats, and test-taking strategies. Prerequisite(s): Level 50 or
higher, placement test or program coordinator consent. No Textbook Required!
Classes offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8pm
General English: These are integrated classes--speaking, listening, reading,
and writing--with opportunities to practice pronunciation, vocabulary
building, grammar, learning strategies and computer technology skills.
Students will develop English language proficiency by exploring various
topics in global culture through meaningful communication at various levels
from Beginning to Advanced (depending on enrollment). Students will be
encouraged to participate in clubs and activities to develop language
learning.
RWAP - Reading & Writing for Academic and Professional Purposes: This course
will focus on helping students practice essential writing skills needed by
academics and professionals. Students will practice writing academic texts,
such as essays, and professional communications, such as letters and email.
Students will also focus on developing reading and grammar skills.
Prerequisite(s): Placement test, Intermediate General English or program
coordinator consent

Placement testing will be held on Tuesday, August 14th at 5 p.m. or
Thursday, August 16th at 5 p.m. Testing will be held at the CESL
building, 2nd floor. Interested students should register before August 22nd
to avoid incurring a 10% late registration fee.
