Good afternoon!

 

Well, it’s that time again – Orientation is fast upon us and many of us have
already heard from our new freshmen. It seems that there has been some
confusion around the Second Language Placement Exam. Hopefully I can clarify
some of the issues for you. The incoming Fall 2012 freshman class will be
required to take the Online Second Language Exam before their orientation
session. They are directed to the exam via the Next Steps Center. I have
attached a “cheat sheet” for you to use during advising. In a nutshell:
because these exams are online (e.g., in an unsecure, unproctored
environment) they cannot be used to satisfy the second language requirement.
This means that for BS and BSB degrees, if a student receives a “2PL” or
higher they will need to either take the course or take the exam in a
proctored environment (see attachment). 

 

My office does not handle scheduling of exams for retakes or for transfer
students; those needing to schedule a proctored exam should visit:
http://w3.coh.arizona.edu/advising. We also do not control when scores are
uploaded into UAcess, so please do not refer students to us regarding this
matter.  My office can help with academic implications surrounding language
placement and proficiency. Finally, the only languages we handle are French,
German, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. As we get closer to the first
orientation I will have more information about placement exams for Chinese,
Japanese and Italian.
