Presentation by: Dr. Nancy Stiller

Counseling skills are NOT just for counselors! Academic advisors are not
mental health therapists, psychologists, or counselors, but they are
effective advisors when they appropriately understand and apply counseling
skills in their work with students. The use of counseling skills such as
active listening, open ended questioning, and summarizing serve as the
foundation for an effective academic advising session. This seminar includes
strategies for understanding and applying counseling skills that help the
advisor make effective use of the limited time provided in most advising
sessions. Discussion includes tips for being empathetic and caring without
getting "worn out", referring students to other services such as CAPS, and
using confrontation skills without being "confrontational."
