Enhance the understanding and appreciation of plant ecology by using
examples of Arizona Plant Life. The course covers taxonomy, species
distribution in relation to climate, photosynthesis, plant community
classification, biological and physical factors related to plant community
distribution, plant community dynamics over time, and human influences on
Arizona Plant Life. The role of research and discoveries made in Arizona
will be emphasized. The premise is that local examples will facilitate
learning the general plant ecology concepts.
Course Structure:
Lectures (two, 1-hr sessions per week) will introduce and develop concepts
in plant ecology. Lab meetings (one, 1 to 3-hr session per week) and one
full-day field trip will use hands-on exercises to illustrate those
concepts, and assist with the 2 writing assignments.
