Lever of South Carolina and signed into law on 8 May 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson. This created a federal law that provided distinct funding for the development of an Extension system in every state with each of the land-grant universities founded by the Morrill Act of 1862. This Extension system consisted of offices in every county in the state managed cooperatively between the university and local county governments and with faculty and staff on the university campus as well. The cooperative arrangement of funding from federal, state, and county governments gave rise to the term “Cooperative Extension” (CE) that is common today.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>We are conducting four regional events across Arizona in 2014 to celebrate this Centennial for CE and on 24 July we are conducting the third event at the V Bar V (V-V) Ranch in Yavapai County. The final CE Centennial event for Arizona will be on <a href="https://extension.arizona.edu/celebrating-past-envisioning-future-centennial-event">4 October at the Phoenix Zoo</a>.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The Centennial event this week on 24 July at the V-V represents the hard work and collective efforts from six counties in northern Arizona: Mohave, Coconino, Yavapai, Gila, Apache, and Navajo. Collectively, this includes 9 CE units, one agricultural center, and 6 Federally Recognized Tribal Extension offices. Thus, this event will highlight many of the programs going on in CE and the programs that are unique to this region. This also provides the opportunity to demonstrate the close integration that we have among our programs with our CE units. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>WRRC Releases 2014 Arroyo: What is the Value of Water in Arizona?</span></b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> - The UA Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) released its newly redesigned 2014 Arroyo last week on a vital topic in Arizona: What is the Value of Water? This year's Arroyo - a free, 16-page annual publication devoted to a single water topic of timely interest in Arizona - is a wide-ranging review of the surprisingly complex subject of water's value, beyond its price. What’s on Your Plate? Exploring Food Science is a comprehensive curriculum package with hands-on experiments in a “kitchen laboratory” setting. Learners explore chemistry, biology, and math to discover the science behind food; investigate why and how things happen in baked goods, eggs, fruit, vegetables, cheese, candy, and beverages; and conduct food experiments and new product development, collect and analyze data, apply sensory science (tasting), and investigate career opportunities using a Youth Science Journal. There are four units, each with an activity for beginner, intermediate and advanced learners. Short tutorial videos, glossaries, podcasts, and links are provided at the 4-H website for further exploration. The new food science curriculum includes 12 fun, hands-on food science experiments, most of which can be done without a kitchen. Gayle provided project leadership, but it was created and pilot-tested by her colleague at Washington State University over the past two years. We plan to incorporate this in our 4-H project selection guide next year. Since then, more than 175 Cooperative Extension employees, volunteers, and retirees with AG/CALS email accounts have completed the CALS Email Upgrade Survey. That's a huge success and CCT thanks you for taking the time to fill it out.
