FCHS CANDIDATE SEMINAR ANNOUNCEMENT:<br>
</b> <br>
On Wednesday, July 16, there will be two candidates presenting seminars
for the Area Assistant Agent – Family, Consumer & Health Sciences
(Yavapai/Gila Counties) position. Lynn Harris will be presenting
from 9:30-11:00am and Hope Wilson will be presenting from 3:00-4:30pm,
both in Marley 230. Seminar title: <i>My Vision and Priorities for
Family, Consumer & Health Sciences in Yavapai and Gila Counties.</i>
Both seminars will be webcast and recorded (with the webcast URL sent out
later).<br><br>

<b>CHALLENGE ISSUED TO TEXAS 4-H – FROM KIRK<br>
</b> <br>
In the spirit of friendly competition, I have challenged Texas 4-H to a
contest to see who can get more groups registered to participate in the
2014 National Youth Science Day Experiment which we designed. So, I have
thrown down the gauntlet, and Chris Boleman, Texas 4-H program leader,
has picked it up. If we can get more 4-H and other groups in Arizona to
register their events and participate in the National Youth Science Day
experiment by October 31, 2014, they will donate some juicy Texas steaks
to us. If they prevail, we owe them some tamales, salsa and prickly pear
jelly.<br>

Let the contest begin! Encourage your 4-H groups and any others to
go on line and register their plans now to participate in the
experiment. Let’s show Texas they might be big, but Arizona is
bigger! The challenge ends at the end of October.<br>

Start recruiting now! We’ll celebrate with a steak fry at the James
4-H Camp next spring!<br>

TWO 4-H YOUTH SELECTED TO GOVERNOR'S YOUTH COMMISSION<br>
<br>
</b>Congratulations to 4-H members McKenzie Braley, Graham County, and
Markanna Moore, Yavapai County, who were recently selected for the
Arizona Governor’s Youth Commission (GYC) program. The GYC was looking
for approximately 7 youth throughout Arizona who are going to be in their
sophomore or junior year of high school to fill openings. <br>
<br>
The purpose of the Governor’s Youth Commission (GYC) is to address issues
that affect youth in Arizona which may result in making recommendations
to the Governor’s Office for Children, Youth and Families. Their
responsibilities have expanded from year to year focusing on such areas
as volunteerism, service-learning, leadership, and civic
engagement. The GYC is a diverse and representative body of
Arizona’s high school population, and is composed of members from
different parts of the state. Each year, members work together on
projects that impact youth across Arizona.<br>

McKenzie is currently participating in The Teen Council Program with the
Graham County 4-H and attended JOLT at the beginning of June to help her
in future leadership programs. She is starting her sophomore year of high
school and is looking forward to the opportunity this will give her to
help out in her community. McKenzie’s involvement in the Graham County
4-H program is what has opened this door of opportunity for her now and
will continue to do so for many years to come.<br>

Markanna has been in 4-H for five years; she is currently a member of the
Prescott Shamrock Hustlers 4-H club, and participates in the beef,
shooting sports, horse, and leadership projects. She will be a junior in
high school next year at Arizona Connections Academy, and maintains a
4.17 GPA. She shows cattle in the Southern Arizona International
Livestock Association, and is currently the vice president of her
school’s National Honor Society chapter. She hopes that she will be able
to bring any leadership skills she gains back to her club, and that the
GYC will help her offer new service opportunities to the 4-Hers of
Yavapai County.<br>

<b>EXTENSION IN THE MEDIA:<br>

</b>The National Agricultural and Rural Development Policy Center
(NARDeP) published a policy brief last week from UA Water Resources
Research Center (WRRC) Director <b>Sharon B. Megdal</b>. “Facing an
Uncertain Colorado River Basin Future” addresses in detail how the
Colorado River is regionally allocated, and discusses how agriculture and
municipalities can work together to close gaps between water supply and
demand predicted in the 2012 Colorado River Basin Water Supply and Demand
Study. Dr. Megdal’s policy brief poses a number of questions to
assist Basin communities in planning their water futures, and calls for
each community to examine its water management, infrastructure financing
mechanisms, new water demands, interagency cooperation and stakeholder
