As a result, we are now prepared to begin the implementation of the new positions that will provide for program development across many areas in CE. The emphasis will be placed on application of funds that have the capacity to develop and conduct productive programs that are capable of providing direct impact. We also recognize that we have an important need for the application of some resources to building good administrative and business function infrastructure in many of our units across the college, on campus, at the centers, and in the county offices.

In terms of process, the EAT group is identifying sets of positions to initiate over the next several months in stages or in a stepwise fashion. When positions are identified for initiation, we will contact the responsible unit head and communicate the approval of the position and the capacity for them to initiate the search and screen process. I have asked the associate directors responsible for programs in CE to provide the direct contact on behalf of the EAT group and to work directly with the unit heads to help facilitate the search and screen process. The associate directors will provide regular contacts with the unit head to help them with the process as necessary and then to provide reports and updates to the CE Director and the EAT group on a weekly basis. The first sets of positions have been identified, unit heads are being contacted, and the process for the search and screen procedures are being initiated. The new funding will provide the support for these new programs and positions will come in the Fiscal Year 2015 (FY15) budget that will begin in July 2014.

This represents a tremendous opportunity for CE and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to build programs that can serve to transfer and better connect the UA to all parts of the state of Arizona and to effectively bring science to bear on the practical problems that we face. Dr. McLain spoke with writer Ken Doyle about her research at the University of Arizona, which focuses on antibiotic resistance in recycled municipal wastewater used to recharge groundwater throughout the United States. According to McLain, a number of studies have detected the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in recycled wastewater. “This has raised enormous alarm about the use of recycled water,” she said, but cautioned that most studies do not take into account the levels of antibiotic resistance genes naturally present in soil and water. In the article, McLain discusses the results of her recently published study with USDA’s Arid Land Agricultural Research Center, which examined antibiotic resistance patterns of a particular group of bacteria - Enterococcus - isolated from sediments in water storage containers used for groundwater or reclaimed water. Her study found that multiple antibiotic resistance, or resistance of single Enterococcus to two or more antibiotics, was markedly lower in isolates from recycled water sediments.
