All CALS units were directed to develop strategic plans, through three distinct phases, and align those plans with the overall strategic plan for the college. Cooperative Extension (CE) was deeply engaged in this process that included connections to every unit in CALS. As we can all easily remember, that strategic planning process took a lot of time and effort from many people in every quarter of CALS. Taking that process a step further, CE developed a strategic hiring priority plan in the past year through a Strategic Hiring Planning Committee (SHPC). The SHPC operated on the collective input from all academic and CE units in CALS and also included input from stakeholders from across the state. This was a process much more comprehensive and far-reaching than Extension led in 2009.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Throughout the entire strategic planning process, and particularly through the SHPC procedures, I was continually asked by people from across CALS if all of this planning was just an exercise or if we would really use any of this information for administrative decision making and management of college resources. Consistent with the messages from Dean Burgess, who initiated the entire strategic planning process in CALS, I have been straightforward and I have tried to be very clear in stating that we are indeed operating within the framework of our strategic plan and the results from the SHPC will be used in implementing a hiring plan for CE. As your Director, I am committed to engaging in efforts that connect directly to our daily work and that tie into our stakeholder’s real aspirations and identified future needs. I believe that I have been clear and consistent in telling you that this was not an exercise in futility but rather an essential step in charting our future based on input from every stakeholder in Extension.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Accordingly, the CALS and CE strategic plans, as well as the results from the SHPC, will be used as guiding tools as we work to invest the new additional permanent funds that have been allocated specifically to CE by the Arizona Legislature and supported by the Governor beginning in Fiscal Year 2015. As you might expect, this investment process will also include new developments in CE that have come up since the SHPC work was completed a few months ago and will reflect the circumstances that have developed with this new funding through the legislative process this past year.
