Based on some discussions that have arisen in response to my comments, I think there is some value in addressing some specific points regarding individual accountability and the CE organization in general. First of all, it is important to point out that I recognize and appreciate the high level of achievements and accountability demonstrated by many of our faculty and staff.

As I have pointed out earlier, accountability begins with the responsibilities outlined in our position descriptions. In practice, accountability also includes individuals supporting the mission, vision and goals of CE, support of its policies and procedures, contributing to the good of the whole, serving on committees when requested, stepping forward to provide leadership when it is needed, etc. I hesitate to use the word “loyalty” but the notion is that there is an allegiance to the organization not just to what is good for the individual in the moment. Our actions demonstrate our commitment to the cultural and organizational values of CE and the importance of these values are communicated rather effectively to the public we work with when each of us are in alignment with these values (e.g., actions speak louder than words).

We must all be individually accountable for demonstrating our professional skills, integrity, and expertise in our areas of responsibility. But at the same time, we are responsible to the CE organization, the college, and the university. Professionally we must consider the ramifications of doing things that are beneficial for the individual in the short term but perhaps detrimental to CE in the long term. Professionally we strengthen our CE system by doing things that are beneficial for the individual in the short term but are also beneficial to CE in the long term.

In CE we are about “improving lives, communities, and the economy” but we also are responsible for the need to strengthen CE as a viable and vibrant organization that will thrive into the future. We have not come this far simply by “looking busy” or by doing things which benefit us only personally. Rather, we are able to celebrate 100 years of Extension because so many before us and those of us now in CE have worked together to advance CE through our individual contributions and by explicitly demonstrating that our programs have public value and are in harmony with and integrate into the overall goals of Cooperative Extension, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the land-grant mission of the University of Arizona.

Let us all commit to continuing our efforts to ensure that Extension enjoys another 100 years of success by working to support the mission and goals of this great organization.
