From an outside perspective or theoretically, one might think that all university programs are driven on the premise of academic freedom and that faculty select a course of study based on academic or intellectual curiosity. That might be the case in some parts of the university or even the dominant theme in some institutions. But programs in CE are more “mission-oriented” and directed by the needs and problems being encountered among the wide range of communities and industries that CE faculty and staff work with across the state. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>In saying that the CE programs are “mission-oriented” I am referring to a fundamental aspect of the basic mission of a land-grant institution, which is to bring the university to the public and communities across the state and to bring science to bear on practical problems. This is generally true in terms of both the translational/applied research programs and the extension education programs that operate in tandem for programs across the spectrum of CE. Our programs in CE are expected and need to be regionally and locally relevant and we have a distinct responsibility to address those needs. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>There should always be a very direct connection between the research and extension education programs that CE faculty and staff are conducting with the real needs of the communities and industries we are working with. If these CE programs are effective and serving their intended purpose there should also be a positive economic impact and positive public value derived from them.
