Well, I am here to offer some help. Around the University environment, it’s the end of the semester as well as the end of the calendar year, the holiday season brings additional activities in various forms of merriment, and everyone is busy trying to decide what to buy the Extension Director for Christmas. Thus, I fully realize the next couple of weeks represent a lot of activity and a certain degree of “crunch time” for everyone. I also know that the beginning of a new year, following the holidays and after a brief period of rest and relaxation, will bring a renewed sense of urgency and an abundance of new things to do. It always seems like everyone wants a report at the start of a new year, classes are beginning, new programs are being initiated, and more. So I can help relieve some stress and tell you not to worry about getting anything for the Extension Director, it’s the least I can do.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>However, knowing that the next 6-8 weeks will represent a very busy time for nearly everyone around us, I want to also ask that we begin to think and plan for the 26-27 February Centennial event that will be conducted in Yuma in conjunction with the Southwest Ag Summit. Even though that event is now more than two months away, the reality is that it is right on top of us and we need to be planning for this event right now. I don’t expect us to develop all the details at this point but what we do need are some commitments from faculty and staff in the units on campus, at the centers, and in the counties. Dr. Kurt Nolte and a planning group for the program on 26-27 February will need to be formulating the details very soon in the early weeks of 2014. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Therefore, we need some initial thoughts and planning in terms of commitments from units and representative personnel to attend and participate in this program. Accordingly, I’m asking each of the unit heads and leaders from all units across CALS Cooperative Extension (CE), as well as all faculty and staff across the college, to begin giving some thought to their level of involvement and to communicate those commitments to Kurt Nolte, preferably before the end of this semester and the holidays. The planning committee can then begin sorting things out and developing an outline for our showing at the SW Ag Summit. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The participation and involvement should not be restricted to CE personnel only but rather we should be broadening the scope and range of our engagement in this and the other Centennial programs to be inclusive of faculty and staff in non-Extension positions in an effort to provide a more complete picture of the many things we do in this college. Overall, this event provides opportunities for all of us.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>DECISION PACKAGE UPDATE:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>A piece of good news - two budget advisors from the Governor’s Staff came to Tucson to visit with me last week specifically regarding the Decision Package proposal that the Governor is reviewing for possible inclusion in the 2015 budget. Both the staff members had excellent questions and I think we had a very productive dialogue. Dean Burgess and Tim Bee joined us for the meeting and collectively we had a robust and very positive discussion. Efforts continue weekly to support the Decision Package proposal and thus far feedback has been supportive.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>FOCUS ON FACULTY:<br><br><o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) engages, educates, and empowers Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition. The President of the United States established the PCFSN through an Executive Order. The Science Board for the PCFSN was formed in 2003 to ensure that the messages and programs of the Council are scientifically sound. The Board includes scholars who have made significant contributions to the research and science of physical activity, health, sports, and nutrition. <b>Dr. Linda Houtkooper </b>will complete her three-year term as a member of the Science Board for the PCFSN in December 2013. As a member of the Science Board, for the past three years, she has contributed to providing science advice to the PCFSN, developing educational resources and publications. Bryan Chadd, Maricopa County 4-H Agent, served as chaperone for the delegation during their 5 days in Atlanta, GA with 1,000 other youth from around the nation. We are pleased to receive funding support from the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation to support this award trip for youth, and a special thanks to Bryan for stepping up to serve as chaperone for the trip.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Cynthia Flynn Establishes Crain Family Endowment for Camp</span></b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> - Cynthia Flynn recently established the first endowment fund through the University of Arizona Foundation for the James 4-H Camp in memory of her parents, Bernard and Jewell Crain. Her father passed away in December last year. A strong supporter of 4-H, outdoor education, hunting and fishing, Cynthia is the former CED from Pima County who still lives in the Tucson area with her husband Kevin. We deeply appreciate her generosity and look forward to growing this endowment in order to provide a strong, permanent foundation for the James 4-H Camp in perpetuity.
