I have reviewed the results of the SHPC ranking process and discussed the rankings with the Extension Administration Team (EAT). The SHPC has done an excellent job and I very much appreciate their contribution of time and energy to complete this process. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The SHPC group, consisting of CE faculty members and unit leaders, utilized the rubric and methods recommended and developed by CALS unit leaders at a retreat in May, which were then further refined by the SHPC in line with our overall strategic plan. The results of this process are quite interesting. I am glad we asked for the submission of position proposals from across CALS CE since there were several submitted that neither I or the EAT group would have anticipated. Accordingly, this information provides a valuable framework to develop a hiring plan for CALS CE that enables us to move forward in a progressive manner and not simply replace what we have lost in the past.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>As we do move forward, we (EAT and the CALS EC) are using these SHPC rankings in the process of planning and implementation of faculty hiring plans in relation to our overall strategic plan. There are, of course, other factors to consider beyond the SHPC rubric such as input from stakeholders, the capacity for the positions to integrate programmatically, availability of funding and other resources to support the positions, political realities, and geographic distribution of other personnel in that program area. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>One basic reality that we have to face right now is the fact that we currently have very limited funding available to begin addressing our hiring plan and we’ll only be able to take small steps in implementing any of these positions. This ranking of positions is important since it helps establish an outline for a hiring plan for FY14 through FY18. If we can be successful in our bid to secure additional permanent state funding for CALS CE, this will enhance our capacity to hire new faculty and build programs in areas of critical need in concert with our stakeholders.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>OUT IN THE STATE:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Dr. Ann Weaver Hart, UA Present, will continue her statewide visitations with a trip to Yavapai County on September 30. Her agenda will include an Extension-hosted supporter’s breakfast as well as an Alumni & Friends Luncheon at the Hassayampa Inn in Prescott.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>FOCUS ON FACULTY AND STAFF:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>After a national search, I am pleased to announce that <b>Ed Martin</b> has been offered and accepted the Maricopa County Director position and as of September 30 he will no longer be “interim” CED. Since he will take on this role full time, he will no longer serve as Associate Director, Programs in the State Office on the UA campus. I know I am losing a member of my Extension Administration Team here in Tucson, but look forward to working with Ed in his full CED capacity. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Also starting on September 30, <b>Ashley Kerna</b> will join the Agricultural & Resource Economics Department as the new Economic Impact Analyst. Her primary duties will include conducting </span><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>input-output analysis for economic impact evaluations that benefit CALS CE; collecting and assembling primary and secondary data necessary for economic impact analyses; writing for technical and lay audiences, publishing in regional economic development journals for professional peers as well as in popular press and other appropriate outlets for lay audiences; communicating analyses and findings orally to lay and professional audiences; collaborating with industry representatives, community stakeholders, and professional peers from other disciplines in research and extension efforts; and collaborating on writing proposals for grants and contracts. Ashley received her MS degree from AREC in 2012 (Bonnie Colby, major adviser) and most recently has been a program associate at the Sonoran Institute working on the Institute's Colorado River Delta program. APW also won a Silver Award in the Outstanding Team category. Housed at the University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center, APW is developing water stewardship and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) literacy through K-12 teacher professional development, direct student outreach, and community engagement. Its award-winning Water Scene Investigation program inspires participants to adopt home water conservation practices through the installation of water-efficient technology and comparison of savings with other water users. APW’s Silver Award for Outstanding Team recognizes excellence in leadership, planning, designing, delivering and evaluating a high impact Extension natural resources program. We installed new low-flow toilets, waterless urinals, started on installing some solar panels for cabin lights, and repaired most of the flood damage from 2012. Next year, we have already received reservations so that the camp is nearly full for June and July--so if you want to reserve the camp for your own group or for a retreat, get your request in early. We are looking at officially closing the camp October 15 after we do some work on the well and install some more solar panels.
