In relation to this I think it is important for us to be consistently aware of the fact that we are currently dealing with 60% of the appropriated base funding today that was available to this organization in CALS Cooperative Extension (CALS CE) in 2008. Rather than spreading ourselves out even further in developing new independent lines of program development, it is important to consider how we might invest in benefiting existing programs that are obviously important to us today and are capable of securing the extramural dollars to successfully leverage the resources that we do invest. In addition, slightly over 60% of the over 600 employees that are currently working in CALS CE are funded by extramural dollars that are secured through extramural grants and contracts to this organization. Thus, we clearly have many people in this organization that are working productively and creatively with respect to the development of programs and developing external resources to support those programs.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>In relation to this issue of strategic priorities we need to avoid a depletion of our efforts or the efficiency of our operations. In this sense I think it is important for us to consider how we might best further develop and exploit synergies in the development of our programs. We need to seek partnerships and work with those who are willing to invest with us in a cooperative venture. Working with partners and developing programs that are currently productive and progressive provide the greatest opportunity for exploiting the best synergistic relations available to us.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Therefore, as we move forward in any effort to identify strategic priorities in CALS CE, a consistent emphasis on my part will be an effort to identify how we can best enhance strong and progressive programs that are currently operating and how we can best conserve our efforts and work efficiently. Congratulations to the entire team!<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The UA Nutrition Network recently hosted the 3<sup>rd</sup> Annual Summer Conference at the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch. Over 80 Pima County teachers attended to receive training on enhancing nutrition education and physical activity in their classrooms and schools. CALS faculty and staff presenters included <b>Dr. Linda Houtkooper</b>, <b>Dr. Laurel Jacobs</b>, <b>Jennifer Reeves</b>, and <b>Monica Pastor</b>. The UA Nutrition Network is a USDA SNAP NEOP funded program, and the Principal Investigator is Dr. <b>Scottie Misner</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The Cochise County 4-H and Bisbee High School project won the Southwest's NCCC Sponsor of the Round award. This project was unanimously selected out of 28 sponsors in round four by the Southwest <a href="http://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps/americorps-nccc">National Civilian Community Corps</a> (NCCC) Program headquartered in Denver. What is so special about this recognition is that typically first time sponsors are unsure of how to manage their teams and/or do not have enough work for them to accomplish. This project was the exception. Congratulations to <b>Darcy Tessman</b> and <b>Lisa Holland</b>. Here is an excerpt from the nomination written by the NCCC Crew Leader, Lindsey Pettit: "As co-sponsors, Darcy and Lisa’s dedication to supporting the team never wavered and went far above and beyond expectations. They consistently strove to make the round as productive and fun as possible, often asking for input on how they could better support the team. Furthermore, they were instrumental in the team’s success in meeting NCCC goals. They put great trust in the team and empowered us to teach and lead members of the community. They made us feel safe in what can be a dangerous environment and created a scenario in which the team was unstoppable. The team refers to them as a “freight train of righteousness,” a dramatic title earned through their commitment to changing the path of their students’ futures and their community. What can be portrayed on paper doesn’t even begin to capture the true nature of how amazing they both are as people, leaders, and sponsors and the invaluable experience we’ve had with them but we can say that in eight short weeks, they’ve treated us unbelievably well, empowered us, and taught us how to be effective change makers." <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>NEW FACULTY REPORTING SYSTEM PROMPTS APROL CLOSING:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>A new UA campus-level faculty reporting system is scheduled to be implemented Fall 2013. This first phase will involve CALS, along with three other colleges that already have online annual reporting systems in place (Colleges of Public Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Fine Arts). CALS faculty who have previously used APROL will use the new system instead for submitting their 2013 APRs. In preparation for loading existing APROL data into the new system, APROL will be closed to new entries or edits on August 2, 2013.
