Of course some folks were predicting last month that we wouldn’t be here now due to the apparently false interpretations of the Mayan calendar that identified the “end of the world” as 21 December 2012. Now it appears that a valuable Mayan Extension Bulletin was lost along the way that provided an accurate interpretation of the Mayan calendar. So this experience just goes to remind us that someone must take the responsibility of interpreting complex information and directing it in a manner that can be understood and put to practice in a useful way. Therein lies an important function of professional Extension educators both past and present.

As we move into this new year and look ahead, we can see that we have some significant challenges and opportunities ahead of us. This college has been going through and continues to experience significant change in many ways. We have all been engaged in a strategic planning process with the CALS 2021 efforts in the past year so that we now have some goals and guidelines identified as a framework to guide us as we move ahead through the next few years. We also have a CALS Cooperative Extension $6.3M decision package proposal that has been advanced by President Hart, strongly endorsed and supported by the Arizona Board of Regents, is now under review in Governor Brewer’s office, and hopefully this proposal will come before the next Arizona Legislature that will begin their session later this month. This in itself represents a tremendous opportunity for the UA, CALS, and Cooperative Extension.

We engage in work through all aspects of change one step at a time, we need to apply the appropriate attention to each step along the way and the decision package proposal is a good example of this. In later December we took advantage of two opportunities to present the Cooperative Extension proposal to groups of legislators and the feedback from both events has been very positive. The feedback has also been very clear in identifying the importance of communicating the positive impacts on economic development that result from the delivery of good programs by CALS through Cooperative Extension programs across the state. Our programs contribute to economic development by helping people and communities solve problems, contribute to job creation and improve productivity. Thus, when we are working to develop this material and we are requesting information from various units and programs regarding economic impact, we have a very real and meaningful purpose and objective. So I want to offer my “thanks” right now to everyone in CALS for your good work and cooperation as we move to advance these opportunities and work to bring them to fruition in the months ahead.

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Last Friday I received a retirement notice from Rob Grumbles, County Extension Director and Extension Agent, Agriculture & Natural Resources, Mohave County and Area Agent, Natural Resources for Coconino and La Paz counties - effective close of business, March 1.
