<b>FROM THE DIRECTOR:<br>

Last Friday morning, 26 October, I was delighted to find a very nice
article written by Stephanie Innes on the front page of the Arizona Daily
Star featuring the Garden Kitchen, a CALS Pima County Cooperative
Extension program. The Garden Kitchen is a relatively new venture
directed by Pima County Cooperative Extension that includes outdoor
vegetable gardens and indoor kitchens for healthy cooking
demonstrations. This venture is spearheaded by Dan McDonald and
Cheralyn Schmidt. Cheralyn was quoted and recognized in the article
but I also know that there are quite a number of Cooperative Extension
personnel that are directly involved in this program. It is great
to see one of our outstanding programs receiving this kind of recognition
and it also clearly demonstrates several fundamental aspects of our
Cooperative Extension programs in CALS. <br>

First, the Garden Kitchen illustrates the community engagement that is
both central and essential to the Cooperative Extension programs that we
direct in all program areas including 4-H and youth development;
agriculture and natural resources; and family, consumer, and health
sciences across the entire State. In addition to the expertise that
we provide and the technical capacities that we may have, direct
engagement with the communities and stakeholders with whom we work is an
extremely important feature of what constitutes effective Extension
programs.<br>

Secondly, the Garden Kitchen is an excellent example of the partnerships
that Cooperative Extension forms with the counties providing that
critical linkage between the university and the public. This is at
the heart of what a land grant institution is intended to provide and the
third component in what the “Cooperative” Extension title actually means
in terms of federal, state, and county elements working together in a
cooperative venture. <br>
<br>
A third element that I see clearly demonstrated by the Garden Kitchen is
that of horizontal integration in the program effort. This program
brings good science to bear on at least four major fronts: 1) gardening,
2) nutrition and physical activity and dietary principles, 3) healthy
cooking practices, and 4) food safety. The good information that
provides the foundation for a program like this is delivered effectively
through a strong Extension education program. This requires talent
and commitment among the Extension professionals that develop and deliver
the program. In CALS we value and recognize these unique skills and
the contributions they provide to our efforts to address our
mission.<br>

Thus, I offer my sincere congratulations and thanks to Dan, Cheralyn and
all of the Pima County Cooperative Extension personnel that direct and
deliver the Garden Kitchen program. Similarly, I offer my thanks to
all Cooperative Extension personnel across the college and the State that
provide the valuable programs in all of our very diverse program areas
that incorporate community engagement, partnerships with counties and
local groups and agencies, and integrated programs with strong science
foundations. <br>

<br>
<b>FOCUS ON FACULTY & ADMINISTRATORS:<br>
</b> <br>
<b>Kirk Astroth</b> has been selected to represent Western Extension
Directors on the Journal of Extension Board of Directors. This is a
three-year term and should assist faculty in our state with understanding
how to successfully publish in this peer-reviewed journal.<br>
<br>
Congratulations to <b>Amy Parrott</b> who was elected as Western Director
for the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents. This is a
two-year term to advocate for and represent the interests of Western 4-H
educators. We are very proud of Amy for stepping forward to run for this
position. In addition, <b>Kim Gressley</b> continues to serve as
Vice-President for Member Services, she also received her 25 Year Award
for Service; <b>Gerry Olson</b> won a national award for Promotional
Package; and <b>Curt Peters</b>, <b>Bryan Chadd</b> and <b>Eric
Larsen</b> won a regional award for their educational package for
JOLT. Arizona 4-H continues to distinguish itself nationally and
provide leadership for our professional association.<br>

<b>O’BRIEN ENDOWMENT AWARD – FINAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS:<br>
</b> <br>
The final call for proposals for the College of Agriculture & Life
Sciences (CALS) James P. & Shirley J. O’Brien Endowment is this week
– the deadline being <b>Friday, November 2</b>. For detailed
