I consistently emphasize the importance of integration with our programs across the spectrum of departments and schools in CALS, with the research/extension centers, county offices, and the stakeholder groups we work with across the state. This form of integration, among all of these components, provides key linkages that are critical in the effective delivery of our programs. Another vital key linkage is with the state and local stakeholder groups and program target audiences throughout the state that are key to this integration. One very important means of establishing and exercising this form of linkage is with the advisory boards that are essential for each of the county offices and research/extension centers.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>In the recent months I have had the opportunity to meet and engage with several of these county and research/extension center advisory boards. These experiences have reinforced my understanding of the fundamental importance of the proper development and management of these advisory boards and the tremendous value they provide in our efforts to fully integrate our programs. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>As we move forward in the process of soliciting public review of our recently developed strategic goals for CALS Cooperative Extension these advisory boards should serve as a key element in this process. With this foundation, at the local levels, we should be able to have broad, effective input for our strategic plan and other issues of importance as we utilize these important lines of communication. Thus, I am committed to working with the County Extension Directors, faculty and staff, and stakeholder groups that provide these advisory board linkages and to supporting their formation and function. She will also be acting as Area 4-H agent for both Yuma and La Paz counties.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Congratulations to <b>Summer Waters</b> who has been nominated for the Valley Forward/SRP Environmental Stewardship Award for the Maricopa County Master Watershed Steward program. Finalists will receive either an Award of Merit or the first-place Crescordia Award at Valley Forward Association's 32nd Annual Environmental Excellence Awards program on Saturday, September 29. Known as the “Academy Awards” of the environmental community, the event is Arizona’s oldest and most prominent competition of its kind. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The UA Water Resource Research Center (WRRC) has recently been awarded two federal grants to work with Arizona communities on water resources planning and management. Both projects will be led by WRRC Director and Extension Specialist, <b>Sharon B. Megdal</b>. “Incorporating Climate Information and Stakeholder Engagement in Groundwater Resources Planning and Management” is a two-year project, funded at approximately $200,000 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The project, which focuses on the Santa Cruz Active Management Area in Santa Cruz County, will use a groundwater model developed by the Arizona Department of Water Resources to evaluate the groundwater recharge response to alternative surface water scenarios. The project goal is to help water managers incorporate climate uncertainties into their decisions. The project team includes SWES faculty member <b>Karletta Chief</b>. The second project, Supporting Watershed Management Planning for People and the Environment in the Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative Region: A Demonstration in the Upper Gila River Watershed, will generate guidelines for the development of baseline assessments of watershed conditions and water management scenarios, using the Upper Gila River watershed as a demonstration site. The Bureau of Reclamation Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative (DLCC) awarded the WRRC $150,000 as part of the $1.7 Million WaterSMART program. A core group met during the Extension conference last month to discuss ways to keep this association going. However, we need at least 5 paid members to reactivate our chapter with the national office. ESP is a member of JCEP (Joint Council of Extension Professionals) and serves a key role in protecting Extension benefits and professionalism. If you have been employed for at least 5 years with Extension and want to help us revive our state chapter, please send a check for $45.00 to Lani Hall in Gila County.
