In review of our experience this past week, I think we had a good conference and I am hopeful that everyone in attendance found it useful, productive, and enjoyable. The planning committee did an excellent job of assembling a strong collection of people to speak to and lead discussions on a broad set of relevant topics. The program was very well organized and managed.

In addition to the organization and planning, a key element for any successful event of this type is the quality and level of engagement from the people in attendance. The energy and activity of all the people at this conference was excellent. As for myself, I truly enjoyed the chance to meet and visit with so many people from across this very broad and diverse organization. However, I did not get a chance to do all that I wanted or get a chance to visit directly with many people that were there. Nevertheless, there will be other opportunities for us in the future, and I very much appreciate the time and effort everyone applied in attending this conference.

A number of people have asked about the anticipated frequency of these Extension Conferences and when the next one will be held. In 2014 we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act and the formation of the Cooperative Extension Service. That will certainly warrant some special attention from this organization and I am currently looking ahead to conducting the next CALS Extension Conference for the summer of 2014.

As we move on from this year’s conference and proceed ahead with our work at hand, it is good to consider, while things are still fresh in our minds from the experience, the things that we could possibly do in the future to improve some aspect of the conference or operation. Please do not hesitate in contacting Peter Warren or Mike Crimmins, the co-chairs for this planning committee, or my office with your comments and suggestions. In addition, the Planning Committee, thanks to Kim McReynolds, will be sending out an evaluation through Survey Monkey.

In conclusion, I will submit the most important part: a special thanks to all of the members of the planning committee for this 2012 CALS Extension Conference and a job well done! – Peter Warren (co-chair), Mike Crimmins (co-chair), Kirk Astroth, Steven Crofts, Kay Hongu, Kim McReynolds, Ayman Mostafa, Haley Paul, Curt Peters, Sandra Saad, Ursula Schuch and Trent Teegerstrom.

100-YEAR FLOOD EVENT AT JAMES 4-H CAMP:

<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype id="_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600" o:spt="75" o:preferrelative="t" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" filled="f" stroked="f">

Fortunately, no group was up at the camp since a 3-foot wall of water must have passed through the lower camp. Needless to say, the pond is full. The dock in the pond was torn from its anchors and is now lodged in the spillway. The road from the first gate on down into the camp is washed out and impassable. Several trees were uprooted, and debris - including rocks, logs, gravel and sand - is everywhere. Most buildings did not have water inside, but the nurse’s cabin did receive some water damage after a log jam forced water up and over the steps. The bridge to the rec center is intact, but the support beam was washed away and all bridges in camp were choked with logs and other debris. The ball field is littered with logs, rocks and other debris. The dining hall and deck are fine. Fortunately, the camp has insurance and so we are busy working with Safety & Risk Management here on campus to file a claim, get a state adjuster up to assess the extent of the damage, and start making repairs. Road damage, however, is not covered in the state’s insurance, so we will need to pay for the road to be repaired. We are thankful that the damage was not worse and that no one was hurt. Last night (August 20) the camp received another 1.5 inches in one hour, further exacerbating the damage and erosion.

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK – Save Word 2010 Documents as PDFs:

To keep your file's format when you share your files with other people or print your files by using commercial methods, you can use Microsoft Office programs to save files as PDFs without needing additional software or add-ins.
