This is to be expected whenever we delve into a major strategic planning operation for the entire college, particularly with the knowledge that we have some rather significant financial challenges to address as well. Under the circumstances, it is natural for people who have a great deal of passion and commitment for their work to “dig in” and begin to make a case for the preservation for their area of expertise and operation. Understandably, we are seeing a fair amount of that taking place in relation to the CALS 2021 Strategic planning exercises that have been active for the past several months.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Therefore, it is important for us to bear in mind that the strategic objectives that we are all working to identify now for each unit and for the college as a whole need to be very broad at this stage in long range planning. This is very well illustrated by the “Vision Pillars” that were recently presented to the college by Dean Burgess following a series of “Visioning” sessions that have been conducted across CALS. Also, if we consider the Phase III questions that every unit in CALS has been asked to address, we should be naturally be drawn to identify broad, over-arching strategic goals that we want to see for the organization by 2021.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>So I suggest that as we all work toward the closure of the Phase III strategic planning across CALS and for Extension that we direct our attentions to the major goals that we want to see for our organization in the next 10 years. For example, we should try to focus on the development of as few as four major goals for the entire Extension organization as we move through this later stage of collective strategic planning. We need everyone’s input and visioning and we need constructive thinking. Everyone needs to step above the natural tendency to retreat into our “silo” or “tribal” tendencies in this process. It does take some effort, but an objective approach can direct us to a productive result and considering the talent and intelligence we have among our ranks we have a lot of potential to realize.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>FOCUS ON FACULTY:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Congratulations to <b>Kerry Schwartz</b>, Department of Ag Education, on her award of Continuing Status, and to <b>Kay Hongu</b>, Nutritional Sciences Department, who was awarded Continuing Status and Promotion to Associate Rank.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Congratulations to <b>Ruth Carter</b>, 4-H Agent in Maricopa County, for her VIP Award from the Commitment to Schools in Tempe and Kyrene (C2S). The award was presented to Ruth at a breakfast attended by Tempe City Council members, city managers and School Superintendents. Ruth's 4-H Safe, Smart & Healthy after-school and summer day camp program has been in place for ten years. She has received funding each year from C2S to employ college students and VISTA and AmeriCorps volunteers to manage the program. Over 1,000 children who live in the housing complex across the street from the Extension office or the surrounding neighborhood and attend Holdeman School from Tempe Elementary School District have the opportunity to participate in this 4-H program. It provides them a safe place to be after school and in the summer increases their academic and social skills, teaches them about nutrition and physical activity for good health, and is an opportunity to participate in some great 4-H experiential programming.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>A new online course related to land use planning is available through Cooperative Extension. The Arizona Citizen Planner 101 (AzCP 101) is a 10-hour online course designed for Planning Commissioners and Elected Officials throughout the state. Planning jurisdictions around the state will find this course invaluable in bringing new planning commissioners and elected officials up to speed on the state’s planning statutes, their jurisdiction’s planning authorities, the role of public participation in developing plans and a host of other useful topics. It is also a great refresher course for public officials who may want to hone their decision-making skills. The enrollment fee is $99 and a certificate is available upon completion of all units. This course was adapted for Arizona municipal and county planning officials by Mark Apel, Cochise County Area Associate Agent, in partnership with Michigan State University's American Citizen Planner Institute and the Arizona Chapter of the American Planning Association.
