These occasional posts provide ready access to “news you can use” and will hopefully stimulate your own insights and ideas.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>FOCUS ON FACULTY:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Last Friday <b>Sharon Hoelscher Day</b> was honored for her nearly 29 years of outstanding service to the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension (UACE) at a reception and dinner celebration at the Maricopa County Cooperative Extension office. Extension administrators, faculty, staff, family and friends celebrated with Sharon as she prepares to retire on November 30. Sharon has been an Area Extension Agent, working in Family, Consumer and Health Sciences programs and a Regional Specialist with the Nutritional Sciences Department. She has provided leadership for several education programs including Bone Builders, Best Bones Forever, Bodyworks, Arizona Nutrition Network - SNAP-ED, Walk Across Arizona, Safe Food 2010, and Master Consumer Advisors. These programs have had positive impacts that have improved the lives of many people and improved communities in Maricopa County, throughout Arizona and beyond. Past honorees from Arkansas, Texas, Illinois, New York, and Pennsylvania presented this year's honor to Everett at an IAPAL recognition luncheon held at the Chicago Mid America Club on Thursday, October 20. Nominations are received by peers with final selections based upon creativity, leadership, vision, and program quality and integrity. Everett is a graduate of Project CENTRL Class III and became Director of Project CENTRL in 1997. Over 500 graduates have successfully completed Project CENTRL's two-year rural leadership program since its inception in 1983. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><br>For anyone submitting insect/arthropod samples from clientele for identification, you should be aware of a new resource of the <b><a href="http://ag.arizona.edu/apmc/">Arizona Pest Management Center</a></b>. <b>Garrett Hughes</b> is a Ph.D. student working in Wendy Moore's lab and Insect Museum on the first ever Extension Assistantship, sponsored by the Arizona Pest Management Center. He is a limited resource (20 hours/week) but is now a designated contact for identification of insect/arthropod samples related to pest management problems of clientele. He is also working on the development of diagnostic information and resources that will benefit Extension IPM. Garrett is now accepting samples for identification and will focus on a quick turnaround to inform IPM decision making. He works with <b>Carl Olson</b> (who will continue to provide identification services) in the entomological museum. Counties should continue to make maximum use of their local identification services, such as master gardeners, whenever possible. <br>Garrett can be reached at <a href="mailto:ghughes@cals.arizona.edu">ghughes@cals.arizona.edu</a>.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The Master Gardeners of Yavapai, Coconino and Gila Counties held the <b><a href="http://ag.arizona.edu/yavapai/ahgc/">Arizona Highlands Garden Conference</a></b> in Prescott October 21-22. “Backyards and Beyond” was the conference theme. <b>Ed Martin</b>, Associate Director and Irrigation Specialist, welcomed the 163 attendees and presented on garden irrigation. Keynote speakers were Whitney Cranshaw, Colorado State University Extension Entomologist and Linda Chalker-Scott, Washington State University Extension Horticulture Specialist. <b>Ursula Schuch</b>, UA Extension Horticulture Specialist, also presented at the conference. Many other speakers, vendors and sponsors collaborated with Master Gardeners to make this a successful conference. For example, if you wanted to know what 5*9+(sqrt 10)<sup>^3</sup> is, just type it in and Google will solve it using its calculator function (the answer is 76.6227766). If you want to know current stock information, just enter the ticker symbol (AAPL is still doing very well). Can't remember how many inches are in a meter? Just type in '1 m in inches' to get 39.3700787.
