Although the future plan is to utilize the information CALS faculty input into the APROL system as much as possible, we also want you to know there are opportunities for faculty, or a designated departmental contact, to be trained to enter project and expert information now. Please alert your faculty and staff to this opportunity for showcasing their international work on the UA website.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Plans continue for the <b>Arizona Science & Technology Festival</b> which will coincide with Arizona's Centennial Celebration in <b>February 2012</b>. The Festival will celebrate the importance of science and technology in our everyday lives and Arizona's world leadership in science, technology and innovation during the next 100 years. In addition, it is a grassroots public-private collaboration coordinated by the Technology Council Foundation, ASU and dozens of organizations across industry, business, education, foundations and community. We believe it is imperative for Extension to be highly visible during this three-week window of events. Local 4-H clubs, research centers, Extension programs, and everyone can help educate Arizona citizens about the role of science and technology in our programs. Plans are being made to hold both signature events that draw large crowds and smaller neighborhood events that highlight exciting careers in science and provide hands-on experiences in science for people of all ages. You will be hearing more about this event in the weeks ahead and how your Extension programs can be represented.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>SOCIAL MEDIA AND EXTENSION:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>A new video (<b><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBFvQI6Phvg">A Social Media Call to Action</a></b>, 15:55 minutes)<b> </b>narrated by Jim Langcuster of Alabama Cooperative Extension is generating a lot of interest and discussion about Extension and the rise of social media. The synopsis reads: “There is a place for Extension educators in this new 21st century information order, but only if we transform ourselves into engaged, networked educators and people who not only inspire their clients but also help them learn and adapt within this radically new world and flattened knowledge landscape. We must become fully engaged, fully networked educators who use social media to disseminate knowledge to much larger audiences and to develop two-way, reciprocal relationships with those audiences.” In the video, Jim points out that we are in a “flattened world” that is providing vast sources of information to people. With this in mind, Extension needs to determine our particular niche for building networks and ensuring knowledge adoption. Extension's “trump card” is that our knowledge has a deep and rich context. This derives from our connection with Land Grant Universities and research-based, unbiased information; moreover, our engagement of learners has been effective in bringing about positive behavioral and practice change for our clientele. Another key advantage we have is what he refers to as “wiki-knowledge” which comes about from collaborative sharing and networking. Our national, state, and regional collaborations are highly effective in deriving appropriate educational programs and sharing information on a national basis. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>ARTICLES FOR BACKYARDS AND BEYOND MAGAZINE:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The editorial team for <b>Backyards & Beyond: Rural Living in Arizona</b> is planning for future issues and asks for your help with articles. They need you to consider topics that you can develop into an article and submit. The magazine is peer reviewed and geared to small acreage landowners.
