Tuesday Morning Notes
May 27, 2014
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
We recently passed the 60th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court
decision on the Brown v. Board of Education case declaring any state laws
supporting segregated schools as unconstitutional. Looking back over the
past 60 years there is no doubt that this decision has had a profound effect
on the civil rights movement and the general nature of public education in
the United States.
The particular focus of this case, which was initiated in Topeka, Kansas,
was related to public school systems and K-12 education, and the unanimous
(9-0) decision made by the Earl Warren Court on 17 May 1954 was developed in
relation to the Fourteenth Amendment. For a public institution and
operating with an educational mission in both resident instruction and
Extension, one can see the implications associated with this famous case and
our obligations in providing educational opportunities to all facets of the
public we serve at the university level.
In Cooperative Extension (CE) we are charged with the responsibility to
bring the university to the people (all people) of the state and to bring
science to bear on practical problems for anyone. That is a large and
challenging mission and CE endeavors to address this challenge through a
broad range of programs in 4-H Youth Development; Family, Consumer, and
Health Sciences; and Agriculture and Natural Resources and we do so in every
county of the state and on American Indian Reservations.
The demographics among the 15 counties in Arizona vary tremendously and CE
works to modify the programs to best fit the needs of the counties by
working directly with the County Boards of Supervisors and the County
Extension Advisory Boards. It is intended that these groups provide the
representation and input from the appropriate elements of the county
population to help us direct effective programs to the various audiences.
Nevertheless, we must always be alert to the ever-changing demographics of
our communities and to provide our programs and educational opportunities
for the benefit of all.
FOCUS ON FACULTY AND STAFF:
Congratulations to George Frisvold (Agricultural & Resource Economics
Specialist) who received $65,000 of a $0.9 million grant to the UA to
develop and facilitate adoption of strategies that manage
herbicide-resistant weeds in major crop systems. Resulting strategies will
provide more effective herbicide-resistant weed management and improved food
security. The project will be coordinated by Iowa State University in
cooperation with the UA and five other universities and George will be
project leader. USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)
announced the award as part of $6 million in grants to support research,
education and Extension efforts through the Agriculture and Food Research
Initiative (AFRI) Food Security challenge area. Only seven research grants
were awarded nationally. For more information, check out the NIFA website
