FROM THE DIRECTOR - The Cooperative Extension Centennial-Follow-Up:

 

centennialredblueoutlines1Last week on Thursday, 8 May we celebrated the
100th anniversary for the beginning of Cooperative Extension (CE) based on
the signing of the Smith-Lever Act by President Woodrow Wilson on 8 May
1914.  This southeastern Arizona regional event was conducted in Tucson at
the University of Arizona (UA) Campus Agricultural Center (CAC) in
conjunction with the Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, Greenlee, and Graham County
Cooperative Extension offices and the Safford Agricultural Center.  

 

We had the benefit of a beautiful day and a very well planned event, thanks
to the hard work and preparations of the faculty and staff associated from
each of the participating units.  Approximately 350 people were in
attendance including a large group of Centennial honorees that have
contributed significantly to CE across the state in recent decades.
Overall, an excellent event!

 

I want to thank and congratulate the entire group of faculty and staff that
developed and delivered an excellent program.  Their outstanding efforts are
truly recognized and fully appreciated.

 

Please make plans to join us at the next two regional celebrations for the
CE Centennial that are planned this year at the V Bar V Ranch on 24 July and
in Phoenix on 4 October.  Each of these events provide for the unique
regional aspects of CE highlighting the broad array of programs that are
being conducted across the State of Arizona through CE and the College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences.

 

FOCUS ON FACULTY AND STAFF:

 

Last week, at the May 9 Dean's Faculty/Staff Luncheon, three Extension
awards were bestowed upon very deserving faculty and staff.  We extend our
congratulations to Doug Tolleson (2013 Extension Faculty of the Year, V Bar
V Ranch), Connie Forsyth (2013 Outstanding Staff in Cooperative Extension,
Cochise County) and Leza Carter (2013 Outstanding Staff in Cooperative
Extension, Pima County).

UPCOMING EVENTS:

 

Thursday, May 15, 1:00-2:00pm - Extension ANR Webinar.  This webinar should
be of interest to Arizona's Extension educators, specialists, staff and
administrators with any natural resources responsibility or interest.  Guest
speaker, Dr. Paul Brown, Associate Director, ANR Programs, will present on
"Charting a Course for ANR Extension Programs."  For program sharing, Paul
will also provide a brief update on the biometeorology program which will be
followed by a Q&A and an opportunity for open discussion and program
