Tuesday Morning Notes
March 4, 2014
FROM THE DIRECTOR - SW Centennial Event:
Our first event for celebrating the Cooperative Extension (CE) Centennial
was successfully completed last week on 26 and 27 February in conjunction
with the SW Ag Summit in Yuma. This event provided an excellent platform
for us to work with the various communities of southwestern Arizona and
demonstrate the strong and functional partnership we have with these
communities and the agricultural industry. Nearly 800 people participated
in this event last week with the main program taking place on Thursday, 27
February on the campus of the Arizona Western College (AWC). Participation
from CALS CE included a group that traveled from Tucson and several central
Arizona locations, most of them on the bus that we provided to Yuma on
Wednesday the 26th where they met with Dr. Kurt Nolte and I at the Yuma
Agricultural Center (YAC) in the Yuma Valley. After a fine lunch at the
YAC, Dr. Nolte led the group on an excellent afternoon tour of the Yuma area
visiting various sites representing some key aspects of the vegetable crop
production, processing, and shipping systems that are extremely well
developed in this region. There was a reception that evening with the
Summit at AWC and then our CALS tour group attended the main program on
Thursday before returning to Tucson and central Arizona.
Another critically important feature of this event was demonstrated by the
fact that the large proportion of the breakout sessions with the program
were directed and presented by our CALS CE faculty and staff who are based
in Yuma, Maricopa, Tucson, and other locations. These breakout sessions are
theme-oriented and essentially turn into Extension education sessions
providing our personnel an excellent forum to present timely updates on
their research and Extension projects addressing key issues in the
agricultural industries of the desert Southwest.
Following the successful completion of this event and the excellent
accomplishments that were realized, I want to express my thanks and sincere
appreciation to Dr. Nolte and ALL of the outstanding CALS CE faculty and
staff with Yuma County Cooperative Extension, the Yuma Agricultural Center,
the Extension Administration staff, and personnel from other CALS CE
locations across the state that provided for the planning, development, and
execution of this event in cooperation with people in the communities and
industry. They all did a great job in making this event a success.
FOCUS ON FACULTY:
Mr. Kai Umeda is now serving as the lead faculty and program coordinator for
the Cooperative Extension Turf Program. In this capacity Mr. Umeda will be
coordinating the management and operations with all faculty and staff that
are contributing to the Extension Turf Program.
FOCUS ON VISTA PROGRAM:
We want to publicly thank Kimberly Koogler, VISTA member at the Tucson
Garden Kitchen, who will be completing her year of volunteer service.
Kimberly has been very active in helping develop curriculum and programs for
youth and families in south Tucson. A really nice article on the Kitchen
recently appeared in a local Tucson magazine called Edible Baja Arizona
<http://www.ediblebajaarizona.com/sprouting-kitchen/> . On behalf of all of
us, we want to say how much we appreciate her service to Arizona Cooperative
Extension and wish her the best in the future. Submitted by Kirk Astroth.
CALSMART RESPONSIBILITY REASSIGNMENT:
Effective March 17, the CALSMart unit is being reassigned to the Pima County
Cooperative Extension Office who will assume responsibility for program and
budget management. Francine Correll will continue her responsibilities as

ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE:
The UA Academic Leadership Institute provides a yearlong professional
development program for 25 faculty and campus leaders, including academic
and administrative department heads, associate and assistant deans, and
individuals identified as emerging leaders. I would like to encourage our
Extension faculty to apply for this program. The details are available at
the ALI website <http://www.ali.arizona.edu/> . Applications are due by
Thursday, March 27. Submitted by Ed Martin.
