Tuesday Morning Notes
June 17, 2014
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
In April this year, Governor Brewer signed the Arizona State Budget for
fiscal year 2015 (FY15) with the inclusion of $3.5M additional permanent
funding for the Cooperative Extension (CE) allocation in the College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at the University of Arizona (UA).
In recent months, I have been working with Dean Burgess to clearly delineate
all components of the CE budget as distinct from the teaching and research
(T/R) portions of the CALS budget. This unweaving process has not been done
in the past and Extension funds were intermixed with T/R funds. We are now
unraveling these two funding streams so that we can maintain complete
integrity with the separate funding line for CE in our state budget. This
step is important since we must demonstrate full fiscal responsibility with
respect to the management of these CE state funds within CALS as per the
directives of the state legislature when CE was identified as a separate
line item in the CALS budget in 2007 and initiated in FY08.
Through this process, Dean Burgess has identified the need to move $401,000
from the CE line to the T/R lines in the college budget to appropriately
direct and balance all funding commitments and allocations. As a result, we
will now be working with a total of $3.1M additional permanent funding to
CE.
This budgetary adjustment will require us to refine the strategic hiring
plan in the coming days to reflect the revised $3.1 million increase in our
CE budget. We remain committed to directing these new monies as soon as
possible toward faculty and staff that will allow CE to deliver an expanded
range of improved programs.
FOCUS ON FACULTY:
We are pleased to announce that Kim Gressley, Pinal County 4-H agent, was
recently elected as president-elect of the Joint Council of Extension
Professionals. JCEP is the umbrella organization for all of Extension's
professional organizations and the leadership of each organization is
represented on JCEP. Kim will become president next summer and will serve
as president from then until 2016. Congratulations to Kim.
I'd like to welcome Paula Kahn-Rivadeneira, Assistant Specialist, Fresh
Produce Safety in the Department of Soil, Water & Environmental Science and
based at the Yuma Agricultural Center. Paul has a 70% Extension/30%
Research appointment and her first day was June 2.
REGISTER NOW FOR THE THIRD CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION EVENT:
A reminder that the third Centennial Celebration takes place on Thursday,
July 24 at the V-V Experimental Ranch at Mahan Park beginning at 9:30am.
The morning program will include recognition of influential contributors to
Arizona agriculture, families, and communities over the last 100 years. The
morning program will also highlight significant research and management of
Arizona's forests for the last 100 years and beyond, describe the history
and impact of the Arizona Tree Ring Lab, and discuss Arizona climate trends
in the past and into the future. Following a BBQ lunch, there will be a
two-hour afternoon session with hands on learning and demonstrations on
various topics from home canning and remote sensing to Native American food
production and forest health. For more information, check out the draft
agenda

WRRC LAUNCHES "CATCH THE RAIN" SUMMER PHOTO CONTEST:
Rainfall in Arizona is cause for celebration, particularly during the
monsoon. To capture the many ways Arizonans catch and use rainwater in our
unique, diverse landscape, the UA Water Resources Research Center (WRRC)
invites photographers to vie for cash prizes in the 2014 WRRC Summer Photo
Contest. The theme of the 2014 contest is "Catch the Rain," and encompasses
the Arizona-specific ways this precious resource is captured -- from water
in our natural environment, to the ingenious ways we catch and use
rainwater. Photographers are encouraged to tell the story of Arizona's
uncommon connection with (and use of) the rain through interesting photo
perspectives, unique detail shots, fascinating vistas, and people in action.
Get creative!
The "Catch the Rain" photo contest runs from Wednesday, June 11 through
Friday, September 26 and each entrant may submit up to three (3) photos.
For more information, go to the photo contest website
<https://wrrc.arizona.edu/photo-contest/catch-the-rain> and check out the
contest rules and guidelines
