Tuesday Morning Notes

July 29, 2014

FROM THE DIRECTOR - The Cooperative Extension Centennial - V-V Ranch Event
Follow-Up

Last week on Thursday, 24 July we celebrated the 100th anniversary for the
official beginning of Cooperative Extension (CE) with the signing of the
Smith-Lever Act by President Woodrow Wilson on 8 May 1914. This northern
Arizona regional event to celebrate the CE Centennial was conducted at the
University of Arizona (UA) V-V Ranch in conjunction with the Mohave,
Coconino, Apache, Navajo, Yavapai, and Gila County Cooperative Extension
units and the Tribal Extension programs from Navajo, Hualapai, Hopi, and San
Carlos Apache Reservations.

We had the benefit of a beautiful day and a very well planned event, thanks
to the hard work and preparations of the faculty and staff associated from
each of the participating units. Approximately 300 people were in
attendance including a large group of Centennial honorees that have
contributed significantly to CE from the northern region and across the
state in recent decades. Overall, this was an excellent event!

I want to thank and congratulate the entire group of faculty and staff that
developed and delivered an excellent program. Their outstanding efforts are
truly recognized and very much appreciated.

Please make plans to join us for the last of our four regional celebrations
for the CE Centennial that are planned this year which will be conducted in
Phoenix on 4 October

l-event> . Each of these events provide for the unique regional aspects of
CE highlighting the broad array of programs that are being conducted across
the State of Arizona through CE and the College of Agriculture and Life
Sciences.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

The UA Nutrition Network recently hosted the 4th Annual Summer Conference at
the Tucson Sheraton. Approximately 80 Pima County teachers attended to
receive training on enhancing nutrition education and physical activity in
their classrooms and schools. CALS faculty and staff presenters included
Scott Going, Jennifer Martinez, Melissa Jahnke, Cheralyn Schmidt, and
Jennifer Parlin. The UA Nutrition Network is a USDA SNAP-Ed funded program,
and the Principal Investigator is Scottie Misner.

The UA Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) has released the Summer 2014
edition of its quarterly newsletter, the Arizona Water Resource (AWR). The
issue includes coverage of advanced water recycling technologies from NASA,
the installation of a new smart water metering system in Oro Valley, an
in-depth review of the "Closing the Gap: How Can We Do It?" panel session
from the WRRC's 2014 Annual Conference, a Student Spotlight feature on WRRC
Graduate Assistant Nathaniel Delano, water news briefs, and much more. The
Summer AWR also includes WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal's Public Policy

4-H CENTENNIAL TREE IS THRIVING:

About a year ago, a tree was planted near Forbes in recognition of the
Arizona 4-H Centennial and it is thriving and even has tiny white flowers.
Next time you are on campus, take a short walk over to

Herring Hall and see our tree.

EXPANDING STEM IN OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME:

Looking for a way to purchase kits for the National 4-H Youth Science Day
Experiment? The Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence and Cox
Communications have partnered to award the 2014 STEM Mini-Grants! The
grants, ranging from $500 to $1,500, will be awarded to Arizona
out-of-school time programs that use creative and innovative methods to
incorporate or expand the use of STEM-based learning.

Eligibility:

*	Afterschool and out-of-school programs serving 6-18 year olds are
eligible to apply and must submit a grant application with a full
description and budget of their planned use for the funds prior to Friday,
September 12. Proposed projects must be conducted outside the formal school
day.
*	Grant applications MUST describe how the STEM project funding will
be used and the educational benefits derived. Grants will be awarded
statewide to programs based on their creative and innovative use of age
appropriate technology or proposed STEM-based projects for the intended
out-of-school time audience.
*	Special consideration will be given to programs that sign the Make
It Count Pledge, demonstrating their commitment to using the Arizona Quality
Standards for Out-of-School Time Programs to strengthen the quality of their
program.

funding to participate in the 2014 National Science Experiment "Rockets to
the Rescue." These applicants have the option of either participating in

AMERICA'S BIGGEST LOSER IS COMING TO ARIZONA!:

Joe Ostaszewski, American's Biggest Loser, is "riding it forward" by cycling
across the U.S. to deliver his message about obesity, healthy lifestyles and
proper nutrition. He is being sponsored by National 4-H Council, so we have
an opportunity to capitalize on his appearances in Holbrook, Flagstaff,
Seligman, and Kingman September 15-19th by coming out in force to show the
"Power of 4-H Youth." What is "riding it forward"? It's a grassroots
movement. Former Florida State University football and Biggest Loser
finalist Joe Ostaszewski will be riding his bike across America to help
raise awareness for the Wear Your Soul project and National 4-H Council
healthy living programs. Ostaszewski wants to inspire young people and
their families to live active healthy lives and provide them with the tools
and programs they need to become "Change Agents" in the fight against
childhood obesity. It's also a movie. "Riding It Forward" will be a
90-minute feature-length film starring Joe Ostaszewski, the Wear Your Soul
Project Team and Children Across America. This film will delve into this
Nation's most serious healthcare crisis in history, childhood obesity, and
tells the story of how it feels being an "Overweight Child" in America. The
dream is that every child is empowered with the tools and programs they need
to become the "Change Agents" in the fight against childhood obesity.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Hold the Date for UA Cooperative Extension and NRCS Soil Health In-Service
Training, Thursday, September 25, 9:30am-3:30pm, Maricopa Agricultural
