Tuesday Morning Notes
September 3, 2013
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
I was recently asked the following question on several occasions: "Is the
process of establishing strategic hiring priorities for Cooperative
Extension (CE) a total waste of time?" My response to that good question is
absolutely not. I very highly respect and value the limits on time and
energy that we have available to us and I have no interest in wasting my
time or anyone else's time with a futile exercise.
There are several reasons for going through the process of reviewing
positions and programs for critical priority ranking. These reasons
include:
1) I want to gain the benefit of having a full scan of possibilities for
investment of the limited funds we have. I do not want to assume, or allow
the EAT group to assume, that we know and see all options that may be
available for investment in programs and related positions. I simply do not
want to miss good options that may exist in CE.
2) We also need to clearly recognize that we're dealing with limited
funding and we certainly cannot address all of the requests, or even a
significant portion of the requests, that are offered now for FY14.
Therefore, we need to establish a priority listing that will include
FY14, FY15, and FY16. We also recognize these priority listings will be
subject to update and revision as we move along.
3) Basically we need to provide CE the best opportunity to leverage the
limited amount of funding that we currently do have and apply it in the best
manner possible.
4) By way of this process I am offering an opportunity for people to
provide their input. If individuals choose not to provide that input, then
we will operate without it. Therefore, this is the opportunity and the time
that if people desire to have input in this process they are encouraged to
do so.
With this or any other administrative exercise in CE, my intention is to
provide open access to input and certainly not to waste anyone's time.
