Tuesday Morning Notes

August 6, 2013

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

I think we all understand the importance of taking responsibility for our
actions, both personally and professionally, and it is important to
understand how that translates into the operations of an organization as
well. The capacity to be responsive in the short term is certainly
important for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and
absolutely critical for an organization like Cooperative Extension (CE).
Similarly, CALS and CE have a commitment to programs that are long term in
nature.

Consistent with the mission of a land grant institution, CALS CE must
maintain direct lines of communication and function with stakeholders
throughout the state and maintain the capacity to be flexible to respond to
short-term needs and demands that can develop. This is consistent with the
"mobility" and "flexibility" that I commonly refer to as important aspects
of CALS CE. As the organization of CALS CE has the need to be flexible and
responsive to short-term needs, so do the individuals working within CALS
CE.

Part of the challenge in orchestrating a balance with our demands for
short-term responsiveness, are the responsibilities we have to maintain some
consistency over the long term. While an organization like CALS CE does not
have the capacity to "turn on a dime," the benefit to that aspect of the
organization is the capacity to maintain some long-term consistency.
Consistent with our mission and the capacity to develop effective programs
from our base of operation in CALS, CE can provide a foundation of
consistency in function and direction for CALS in a long-term manner. This
consistency can also be translated to a sense of stability for an
organization over time.

As we work to effectively manage our resources in CALS CE, we are constantly
faced with the dual demands of short-term responsiveness and long-term
responsibility. This challenge is not unique to CALS CE but it is an
important feature of our organization that we need to recognize and work to
balance and manage in an efficient and balanced manner.
