Tuesday Morning Notes
May 15, 2012

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

I have often used the term “boundary
organization” in an attempt to describe some
unique and very important characteristics
associated with CALS Extension. Of course I know
what I am trying to say but it turns out, not too
much to my surprise actually, that the reference
to “boundary” means different things to different
people. Thus, I may not be effectively
communicating what I am trying to describe.

In my view Extension serves as the vital linkage
between the university main campus body and the
public (stakeholders, constituents, citizens,
etc. etc.). This function of Extension as the
primary vehicle of exchange between the
university and the public, which needs to be a
two-way exchange to be most effective, is a
critical element that distinguishes a land-grant
institution from all others. The College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences is unique among UA
colleges in having Extension as an integral and
effective component. Thus, I attempt to use a
single term such as “boundary” organization to
describe this role and responsibility that Extension carries for CALS.

Perhaps we will find a good term or phrase to
more effectively and concisely describe Extension
in this manner and I will be most willing to
incorporate that phrase into my general
lexicon. More importantly, beyond the words we
use to describe it, my goal is for Extension to
more completely function in this capacity as the
living and dynamic interface between the
university, CALS, and the people of
Arizona. Accordingly, I believe CALS Extension
needs to be more completely integrated throughout
the college and more vigorously engaged with the
public and to serve as THE vital boundary
organization for CALS and the UA and to be
clearly recognized and respected in that capacity the primary interface.

This is not to say that CALS Extension does not
address this goal right now but in the context of
the present importance of having a strong link to
the world beyond the campus, I think we can and
must be much better at doing this than we are
today. Thus, I can offer this to you as one of
the major goals I see as important for us in the
next 10 years. The next step to consider is how
we best accomplish this objective with the
delivery of our broad spectrum of programs in CALS Extension.

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK – THE INTERNET WAYBACK MACHINE:

Ever wonder how a web page looked 5, 10 or 15
years ago? The
<http://archive.org/web/web.php>Internet Wayback
Machine has snapshots of web pages archived. For
instance, there are snapshots of CALS webpages
(AgInfo) back to December 16, 1996. The
Extension webpage snapshots go back to December
6, 1998. The main UofA webpage snapshot goes back to October 29, 1996.

COOL & INTERESTING BUGS!!!!:

This week is the last chance to show off your
photos of cool and interesting bugs! The contest
ends May 20. Post your photos to our
<https://www.facebook.com/ArizonaCooperativeExtension>Facebook
