Tuesday Morning Notes

February 7, 2012

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Description: deanfish2

"Is there a doctor in the house?" Yes, there is.and congratulations to Dean
Fish who received his doctorate in Animal Sciences from the University of
Arizona in December 2011 (after 8 years of study, working full-time, and
raising a couple of kids).

TEAM RECEIVES CYFAR GRANT:

Dan McDonald (Pima County), Elizabeth Sparks (Pima County), Darcy Tessman
(Cochise County), and Jennifer Reeves (Nutritional Sciences) were awarded a
five year, $574,000, Children, Youth and Families at Risk (CYFAR) grant
through USDA/NIFA for the Teens Advocating Sustainable Change (TASC) project
in Pima and Cochise Counties. TASC uses an evidence-based youth leadership
program developed by Action for Healthy Kids, called Students Taking Charge,
which engages high school youth positively in wellness efforts through
youth-adult partnerships in which activities encourage participatory
learning, decision-making, critical and creative thinking, cooperative
learning, leadership, and communications skills. Participating schools in
Tucson and Douglas will form Student Wellness Advisory Teams (SWAT) and
participate in training at Tucson Village Farm, located at Pima County
Cooperative Extension.

DEAN'S STRATEGIC COMMITTEES:

As you may recall, Dean Burgess announced the formation of a couple of
committees to help with moving his vision of a 21st century College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences forward. Two committees will be meeting over
the next couple of months and could use involvement from Extension field
faculty. Please feel free to contact committee co-chairs if you are
interested in serving on either of these important committees.

*	Dean's Research Advisory Committee-co-chairs Rod Wing and Stephen
Russell
*	Faculty Consultative Group on CALS Effectiveness, Efficiency and
Innovation-co-chairs Joel Cuello and Wanda Howell

ELECTRONIC SIGNATURE POLICY:

A new policy on electronic signatures has been released. The policy is
available on the UA Policy website
<http://policy.web.arizona.edu/Electronic_Signatures.pdf> .

WASHINGTON FOCUS:

*	NIFA Schedules AFRI Listening Session -- Plans are underway for Doug
Steele, ECOP Chair, to provide comment during the February 22 listening
session in Washington, DC about the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative
(AFRI) managed by USDA-NIFA. Details of the listening session are posted in
the Federal Register
<http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-02-01/pdf/2012-2100.pdf> and all
Cooperative Extension Section members are encouraged to participate with
written comments or oral presentations.
*	USDA NAREEE Advisory Board to Feature Cooperative Extension -- The
National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education and Economics (NAREEE)
Advisory Board, which provides recommendations to USDA Secretary Vilsack and
Congress, will feature Cooperative Extension in its discussions March 28-29
at a site selected to align with USDA REE Undersecretary Cathie Woteki's
visit to Texas. Texas Agri-Life Extension, Prairie View A&M University,
ECOP, and the Cooperative Extension Executive Director and Administrator
Team are working with the Advisory Board leadership to plan the agenda.
This is an opportunity to showcase the power and potential of Cooperative
Extension nationwide.

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK:

Do you want to look up information on Google with your phone, but you don't
have a 'smart' phone or data plan? If you have text messaging, you can use
Google's SMS (text messaging) service to do this! Just text a message to
466453 (G-O-O-G-L-E). For the message, you can include such requests as:

*	phone directory:  search term + zip code (e.g., Wal-Mart 85710)
*	dictionary: define + word (e.g., define outreach)
*	directions:  directions + location + to + location (e.g., directions
Tucson, AZ to Phoenix, AZ)
*	basic Web search: web + search term (e.g., web how to grow tomatoes
in Arizona)

More search functions and help are at the Google SMS Search website
<http://www.google.com/mobile/sms/search/> . Also, because text messages
have a character limit, answers may be spread across multiple messages. Of
course, "standard text messaging rates apply."

ADDRESS CHANGE:

To honor the Navajo Code Talkers, Holbrook changed the address (although the
location is still the same) of the Navajo County office. It is now 100 E.
Code Talkers Drive, Holbrook AZ 86025. Please note for future mailings.

_land_grant_institutions_vital-212059-1.html?pos=oopih> ESSAY:
Reinvigorating Land-Grant Institutions Is Vital by John Carlin and Mark E.
Keenum - This year marks the 150th anniversary of the U.S. system of
land-grant colleges and universities. It's an opportune time, especially in
light of government budget woes, to take stock of the benefits land-grant
institutions have produced over the years - and to step up our investments
in their potential to help lead America into a new era of scientific
discovery and economic progress.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

WRRC Chocolatefest - Friday February 10 - welcoming Jean McLain, the new
Associate Director for WRRC! If you like water and you like chocolate, you
have an opportunity to sample delicious desserts from local kitchens and
fine chocolate from around the world while discussing the water issues of
the day. Bring your favorite chocolate delicacies to share. The meeting
will take place at the Water Resources Research Center, Sol Resnick
Conference Room, 350 N. Campbell Avenue, from 3:30-5:00pm. Parking is

Yuma SW Ag Summit - March 7-8 - a great example of the strong partnerships
within the agricultural industries and a byproduct of side-by-side
collaboration among industry leadership, university research, teaching and
Extension. The summit kicks off on March 7 with a morning assortment of
field demonstrations at the UA Yuma Agricultural Center, an afternoon golf
tournament and evening reception. The academic program is slated for March
