Tuesday Morning Notes
August 14, 2012
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
Who needs another meeting or conference? If that question were posed to me,
my common response would be "No thank you, I have plenty already." Now,
guess who it is that has decided to conduct a conference for three days this
week in Tucson for the entire CALS Extension organization. That person is
none other than yours truly. But I can explain.
I usually consider the value of a conference or meeting in relation to three
basic criteria: 1) there is a tangible professional value in the program,
2) it has the prospect of being well-organized and conducted, and 3) the
costs in terms of time and money are reasonable. For the Extension
Conference that we are conducting this week from 15-17 August our intentions
are to meet these criteria for all in attendance. CALS Extension has not
had a conference for several years, we have a new administrative group in
CALS, we are all working through many changes at this time, and we have many
challenges ahead of us. This is a diverse and widely dispersed organization
with faculty, staff, and programs in every department in the college, each
of our research and extension centers, in every county in the State of
Arizona, and on many of the American Indian reservations. We can all
benefit from an opportunity to convene as a full body, address and focus on
the issues at hand collectively, and have the chance to interact face to
face with our colleagues.
I know that Peter Warren and the entire Extension Conference planning
committee have all been working hard to develop a good program and that the
Extension Administrative staff also have invested a lot of time and effort
to organize this conference. I am looking forward to working with everyone
this week and I would like to thank all of you in advance for taking the
time and making the effort to join us. Let us all work together to make
this a useful, productive, and enjoyable conference.
FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:
Dr Sanjiv Singh, of Carnegie-Mellon University, presented a seminar on July
13 at the UA-CEAC, "Recent Experience, Challenges and Opportunities in
Agricultural Robotics." The recording is now available online
<http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/media/ceac_index.htm> (his talk begins at the
5:15 point into the file).
FUNDING FOR SIGNATURE PROGRAM TEAMS FOR FY2012-13:
The Extension Administrators met on August 1 to review the proposals
submitted for Signature Program Teams for FY2012-13. Twelve proposals were
funded. The list of funded proposals and allocations are at the Extension
Programs Funding site
<http://extension.arizona.edu/state/extension-programs-funding> .
FY 2012-13 SABBATICAL LEAVE REQUESTS:
Extension faculty applications for sabbatical leave
<http://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/faculty_leave> for 2012-2013 are due
October 1 to CEDs and November 1 to Jeffrey C. Silvertooth c/o pattiB (and
then due to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs by November 12). All
applications must be reviewed by the CALS Sabbatical Leave Committee and
approved by the Dean. You must submit an original and three copies of the
application and the letter of support from the unit head which must address
how teaching or other major responsibilities will be covered. Instructions
and forms can be accessed from the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs
<http://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/sabbatical_leave> web page. If you have
questions at the Extension level, either see your CED or contact Patti B.
<mailto:pattib at ag.arizona.edu> (520.621.5308). If you have questions at
the CALS level, contact Audrey Levine <mailto:alevine at email.arizona.edu>
(520.621.3612).
TECH TIP OF THE WEEK:
Do you have a document in Adobe Acrobat PDF format, but the original
document (e.g., Microsoft Word) is lost? With Acrobat X, you can easily
export a PDF document to Word or Excel. Just open it in Acrobat, then
choose File, Save As, and choose the format, e.g., Microsoft Word or
Spreadsheet. Additional choices under More Options include Rich Text and
Plain Text formats. An instructional video from Adobe is available at the
Adobe TV website
<http://tv.adobe.com/watch/acrobat-x-tips-tricks/how-to-export-pdf-to-word-o
r-excel/> .
UPCOMING EVENTS:
A Framework for Problem Solving is the third and final offering of a
three-part webinar series introducing a range of skills for managing and
resolving conflict. It will be presented by Amanda Murphy
<http://ruckelshauscenter.wsu.edu/about/documents/MurphyResume.2.27.12.pdf>
from the William D. Ruckelshaus Center
<http://ruckelshauscenter.wsu.edu/about/> on August 1 from 9:00-10:00a.m.
Pacific Time and will be located at the Washington State University Adobe
Connect site <http://breeze.wsu.edu/ext_skills/> . If you have any
questions, email Jim Lindstrom <mailto:jlindstr at wsu.edu> .
The session description is: Daily we are faced with issues that require us
to make decisions with others. In most conflicts, neither party is right or
wrong; instead, differences in perceptions, values and ideas collide to
create disagreement. When disagreements arise, good problem solving skills
are essential. This session will introduce the steps of problem solving,
show how to use communication skills to define problems and uncover
interests, introduce techniques for generating and evaluating solutions, and
present options for when resolution cannot be reached
